Default Carbon depositing blocking inflow?

Last Thursday, I discovered my '96 Accord EX Coupe (4-cyl)'s engine check light coming on... and soon noticed the gas gauge moving down way too fast!

I took it into my mechanic the following day and found out that there was too much carbon deposit on the air intake! Is this common?? Or sign of worse to come?? Thanks for the inputs guys...

Yup, pretty common; often considered a maintaince item by many manufacturers. What with PCV byproducts, oil vapor, dust and small furry animals contaminating the inlet track, it's surprising they run as well as they do.
