AP2 S2k vs. Z4: Need to buy one soon.
I've had my mind/heart set on the S2k. But then last night, I accidentally ran into a Z4 ad. I realized that for the price I'm paying for a AP2 S2k, I could get a ~2003 Z4 with under 30k on it. And yes, it's the 3.0L version. Now I'm back to square one. Here's what I think are the pro's and cons:
S2K Pros:
-reliable (it's a Honda)
-inexpensive maintenance (it's a Honda)
-beautiful
-top performer
S2K Cons:
-minimal/no frills interior
-not the most comfortable ride
Z4 Pros:
-classier than the S2K
-nice/roomy interior with *** warming seats!
-more comfortable ride
Z4 Cons:
-expensive maintenance
-expensive insurance
-less performance focused
I'm not gonna ask which car you'd take because this is an S2K forum so the answer is obvious. But is there anything about the Z4 that I haven't listed as a con? Thanks.

the maintenance on the S isn't as cheap as you might think..... if you stick with high performance tires, (SO2) the tread life doesn't last to long.. (unless you're driving like a granny) so expect to change tires once a year.... and these tires are not cheap....
and if you live in the north somewhere and the S is your only car, you'll be getting a set of winter tires also... so you can live though the winter...
i say
- if you want comfort get the z4..
- if you want pure thrills while driving, and a smile on your face everyday when you get out of it.. get the s2000....

I dont have S2k or the Z4 but I would take S2k in a heart beat over Z4.. Only other cars that make me think twice would be M3, Evo, Sti, or 350Z..

i am going to blunt.
if a stock s2000 isnt "comfortable" to you, then you are somewhat of a girl and i suggest you go buy whatever your mom thinks is a better car.
i have yet to sit in a z4, but you live in LA. you will rarely use the heated seats.

You're going to get some bias on this board, but I'd say go S2K. The z4 is a beautiful car and all but the only people I see driving around in them are middle aged women, very little parts backing, maintenance will definately be a lot more on the Z compared to the S.
Z4 is by far a more luxurious little roadster...and it has more torque which will make it feel faster off the line. Side by side, the S2000 slightly out performs the 3.0 version, and greatly outperforms the 2.5litre Z4. Styling wise its all opinionated, ive never been a fan of the Z4's styling, but i have seen some incredibly beautiful modified ones.
In the end, you'll spend more for the luxury items in the Bimmer...you'll also get just a little more leg room. The S2000 to me is a little more raw, has more character as a pure sports car than the Z4 does...but both are great roadsters.
Truthfully though, if i were to pick a BMW roadster, i'd go with the M Roadster over the Z4, because it would eat both the Z4 and S2000 alive...in all aspects, only problem is, warranty...you'll be hard pressed to find a cheaper one with warranty, and if you do, its probobly certified and will cost you a fortune.

I LOVE the M Roadster. But I just don't wanna deal with something that old (and expensive). Thank you all for your feedback. I'm now again leaning towards the s2k, mainly bc of the maintenance costs . Now I just gotta decide on the color. I want yellow, but I'm afraid I'm gonna wake up a month after I buy it and wonder why the hell I bought a bright yellow car.

I will try not to be bias on this. My friends mom has a Z4 and we took it out for a spin a couple times. We look gay as hell but none the less we wanted to see what if anything was so special about it. Its ok. Its not too fun to drive. If your a girl i'd say get it, its a hands down girls car. The S is a harsh ride because ummm....its on stiff *** suspension because its focused on sprited man driving. Z4 has semi soft suspension. It is for people who want a convertible roadster and think just because its a BMW it has more "class." Now if you want to be manlier and decide to get an M3 than...**** its a M3. I would say get an S over the Z. I mean its even before the Z alphabetically that has to mean something!
^^^ Was it a 2.5 or a 3.0? There is a very VERY big difference...
And while the M Roadster is expensive...it is not all that old, the last series of that car was built in 2000 (i believe as a 2001 model) with the E46 M3 6cyl. platform. That car will absolutely rip the doors off anything you throw at it in the price range ($25,000-$35,000)...and me personally, i would go with the Mcoupe before roadster, but only because i have a soft spot for hatchbacks. Reliability all depends on the previous owners, i can tell you first hand...3.0i Z4 owners and M Roadster/Coupe owners are usually the meticulous maintenance ****** you want when looking for a BMW...they will be the ones that had it serviced at every interval, and the same ones that babied their cars (even if they did beat on it now and then).
Maintenance on the BMW's is not what the stereotypes lead you to believe...in this caliber of car, one could almost call the maintenance on them "cheap"...you should see what Ferrari owners spend yearly just for maintenance. The bottom line is, the S2000 is cheaper to maintain because it doesnt have the service intervals nearly as often...but the car itself is no more or less reliable...i have a 2002 325Ci, and i spent $600 maintaining it this year...thats it. Oil changes were routine as with any car, but $600 is the total amount i spent outside normal maintenance.
To me...thats chump change.

When the Z4's came out, I thought they're the ugliest car to date for BMW. Now that it's been out for a while, it has become the second most ugliest car (barely) since the production of X3's.
I really do not like the Z4's, but only from an aesthetic point-of-view. Performance wise, they're very competent, as they're in the same class as the S2k (I think?) and very track worthy, also. But, if I were to get a BMW, it'd definately be the E46 M3. Nothing else really intrigues me.

Z4 is a really nice car but if you're looking for sportier feeling and something that can get you to the corner faster, i mean s2k is your best bet. Put it this way, for dollar to dollar value, S2k is my bet not because this is Honda forum but i test drove both of them...sorie to say that Z4 is slow as hell...not as responsive as Honda...the only thing i like bout the z4 over s2k is just how the interior was set up...it has more amenities, everything is very accessible to the driver and felt more comfortable when cruising because its a lot quiter engine than s2k...Bottom line for me, "where can u find a car that will come close with the performance and value of the s2k? To me, 33k for brand new is a bargain for that car, considering the performance and reliability
The Z4 "M" roadster just does nothing for me...doesnt have that same appeal the Z3 chassis M Roadster did, but thats just personal opinion.

The 3.0i Z4 has nearly the same acceleration #'s that the S2000 does, so as far as it being "Slow as hell", perhaps if you were talking only the 2.5, but the 3.0i is no slouch. Responsiveness between the S2000 and the 3.0i sport would be very hard for the average driver to tell, and based on #'s, it would be impossible. The problem is, if you get into the Z4 thinking "This car isnt as good as the S2000...", that is exactly how its going to feel...when truthfully, it is very close in performance, but only in the 3.0i sport trim.

My brother and i always called that car the ***** mobile from the Ambiguously Gay Duo....I think from SNL (Saturday Night Live).
I think its a dope car, but in comparison to and s2ooo, I 'd much rather have an S.
Really, i'd rather have 30,000 dollars and an EG in comparison to that roadster.

^^^ It may not be that attractive to some, but that car would wax the floor with the S2000 in all aspects. Especially the last year model...which i think was 2001.

Its not really that fast when it comes to acceleration...but damn it handles pretty well for the size of the car. That and its comfortable, to me it has awesome styling, only thing i didnt really like about it is the weird Bimmer clutch and the shifter that has such a long throw...but its certainly not a "fast" car, but its a fun car to drive.

Outside a very select group of people, including me and my brother, i really do agree with you...and i cant for the life of me understand why, since half of the ones that ARE arrogant are the ones that drive BMW's that anyone really could afford, i mean hell...my 325Ci cost as much as most people spend on a new Civic...so yeah, i love the car, but its not a freakin' Ferrari or anything.

Yea, but what would you rather have...a fat ugly bitch that put out, or a super model that needed some leasons...
I know that the performance of that roadster is better then the s2ooo, but i am a honda fan and my blind love shines through again
.
I wouldnt complain for a minute though to own either one, and if i for some reason had an opportunity to get one for a good deal i totally would.
I would just get an S first

Im a bit jaded having already owned an S2000...i wouldnt think twice about getting the MCoupe...having only driven a few of them over the last several years. But its all about opinion...in this case, give me the fat ugly nympho...
