Ok, so im looking at making some itb's for my 2.0l setup, do you guys running them have a filter on them some how or just running them open? it gets kinda dusty here sometimes in summer and just wondering if that will do anything? just seeing how you guys are runing yours?

I put aboutb 7k on my motor without filters, we will see what it looks like when I take it apart..
I have notice more wear in the cam journals since the itbs so there definatly more debris in the motor.. I noticed this duriung on of my cam changes..

I never understood why one with ITBs would NOT use filters.

wouldnt you get more power out of a car with filters? i saw a dyno graph of a short ram with and without a filter, low end was a little better without the filter, but the top end got killed with out it, but i dont know how this would affect itb's

I sucked up rocks with my ITB's with no filters. Didnt hurt the motor or anything but it chould of been worse.

I ran my ITB's all year long.

I run Weber sidedrafts and wouldn't even consider not running filters. If you have a good set of filters there really shouldn't be any restriction. I run Pipercross one-piece foam kk600 series. You can get the same setup for ITBs--only thing is I had to drill the backing plate--no big deal. I will post pics if anyone is interested.....Jay

you get more debris in the oil if you don't run a filter....

its the same if you run a short ram intake w/velocity stack instead of filter....

atleast put screen over them like people do with turbos to avoid anything large from getting in there you dont want to see your motor go down because of a pebble

personally I would put filters on just so the air would be cleaner going in and hopefully prolong the life of the engine

Screens actually disturb the airflow more than filters. thus causing a power loss.

And its not the big parts that harm the engine, those just cause instant damage. Its the dust and small particles. Its kinda like giving your internals a good dose of sandblasting.

Well I simply didnt because any filter and or screen setup I ran on the dyno cost me 7-10 whp when they were on.. I dynoed about 4 different setups..

I knew this motors life was only expected to go 5 k with the power it make's. I got lucky and got 15 k ..
Know understand , my motors are so clean that most cam companies dont even think I have run their cams when I send them back after dynom testing.. So when I say I noticed some wear , its lees then what most stock motors look like after they have been torn down for the first time.. IM super **** about how clean my stuff is when I assemble it.. Plus 'i do have my vapor degreaser tank at work to clea stuff in aerospace controlled enviroments..

lol. do you wear a latex future suit and use a ray gun when you clean stuff?

seriosly though, can you comment on what kind of filters you used, not manufacturers, just types. Foam, paper, etc. Any comments you can make would be appreciated.
thank you
marcin.

Those filters really look like they kill the benfefit of the velocity stacks on the itbs. I wonder if they would be safe to run on a non-filtered tune so you could have full power at the track and safety for daily duty?

The best setup is either a "plenum" style airbox (like on the Pocketrockets racing car) connected to a 3" pipe with a cone filter on the end OR if you don't want to run an airbox in my opinion the best ITB or sidedraft carb filters are the Pipercross or ITG style. One backing plate, a foam filter (available in pretty much any height you want) You put a little of their "foam filter oil" on the filter, you get great flow and pretty good filtering.

Also, those "filter screens" supposedly do more harm than good. Like someone mentioned earlier the chances of you sucking up an acorn size rock into your motor are pretty nil, but its the fine dirt that mixes with oil in your motor to form a grinding paste--and those screens don't block the dirt and they really disrupt airflow more than a good filter. Also, some people mount those individual foam filter on each velocity stack with a ty-wrap--those are pretty awful as well. Since the actual filter touches the velocity stack--it disrupts the airflow. They are known to be not too good. You don't see them on race cars.
