Which camera Q
ok since this is appearance and cosmetic, and since i see all kinds of great pictures here i thought id ask here
i want a new camera and ive got about 400 to spend and i want help finding one that has a few things that i want. initially i was looking at the pentax s6. my mom has an older s4 and i used to love playing with it.... but i found out it doesnt have manual adjustments for aperture and shutter speed
so does anyone have any suggestions on some cameras to take a look at?
i want small in size (relative)
a decent macro setting
aperture and shutter speed adjustablility
any info would be great

there are a bunch more but you get the point. i'd rather have the A95 over my Sony DSC-W1 (which is a much more expensive camera) but...meh. the A95 is probably as good as it gets for a point-and-shoot.

heh, i have the DSC-W1 which is basically the W5. they made the W1 then quickly cancelled it for the W5, for some reason. here are some of my W1 pics:

etc etc, i could ***** for days. the W1/W5/W7 is a great camera, but from the options ive seen for the A95 (and especially the price holy crap!) i'd pick the A95 if i were buying all over again.

not trying to turn this into a sony vs. canon thread, but canon has much nicer glass. also i'v found sony's to have alot of noise when in low light situations, even with the ISO set low. just my .02

I'll tell you right now,
if you care about image quality,
do not purchase anything but canon or nikon.
sony cams also have good image quality but are almost always 100bux more than the competition..
i'd say canon is ur best bet

Canon a610 or 620 if you want to spend your $400 all on the camera (only difference is the 620 is 7mp). I just bought the 610 and it takes fantastic pictures. Great for someone like me who wants to get into the manual adjustments but is not ready to drop $1000+ on a DSLR nor needs their camera for more than personal pictures.
The Canon is fairly portable. It fits in my pocket but its definitely not a 'party' camera like the smaller s400 (Canon elph) line.

another reason to go canon..

I've done a bit of research.
Here's what I reduced it down to:
Olympus SP-350 8.1mp
vs.
Canon A620 7.1mp
Here are the differences I noticed:
+ Canon has a higher max shutter speed (1/2000 vs. 1/2500)
+ Canon has a closer macro range (1cm vs. 2cm)
+ Canon has been around longer
+ Olympus SP-350 is 8.1 Megapixel and 8.3 Million Sensors vs 7.1/7.1
+ Olympus is a tad bit smaller
+ Olympus is 2.5" LCD vs. 2.0" LCD
+ Olympus has RAW Mode as an extra feature]
+ Olympus has Hot Shoe
+ Both have optional thread lenses
+ The rest is the same
Which is going to better for taking picture of cars?
Will the 1cm vs. 2cm smallest macro possible make a noticeable difference?
Which will be the better camera in the long run?
Olmypus is $359.00 at Costco, Canon is $349.99

If your not too serious about photography and would just like the everyday camera that you can carry in your pocket, stick with a point n shoot such as the A95 or DCS-W5 like mentioned above. They take decent images for the money. If you think you really want a camera that can surpass your imagination, for starters I'll have to suggest either the Canon Digital Rebel XT, Nikon D70, or even the older Rebel 300D would do for a beginner. Once you've learned the fundamentals of how a DSLR works, you can upgrade to something a little more professional like the Canon 20D, or even higher end models if money is not an issue to you. I myself am a Canon user, and you can check out my Gallery in my sig for some of my work with the Rebel XT. Good luck.
