Default ball joint and dust seal

the dust seal for the driveshaft on the knuckle get in the way of removing the ball joint. is it safe to take the ring off and leave it off, or should i put it back in after i change the ball joints. i know you have to remove the seal for b series axles, but my car is still a d and will be that way for a while. ive read as many ball joint threads as i could find in the archives, and the question is posed in a couple threads, but is not answered as far as i could tell.

I just took out the dust seal so I could get the ball joint out and then put it back in.
