Default The first 15 minutes of welding with my Miller Maxstar...

Turned out pretty good I think. I can't post pics unfortunetly, because my camera is being gay. However, for some reason my welds on some sch40 304 with 308l rod are turning out kinda carbonie/gunmetal/black. How can I get those nice gold and clean welds.

Edit: this is the first time I've ever tiged. I'm basically trying to teach my self from the information I find online, and the advice a couple freinds are giving me.

I tried amps from 75-120, and gas from 15-20. I have 1/16 red tungsten, and was using .045 rod.

Any help would be great!

I need a lot more practice...

The dark color usually means its too hot, but could possibly be unsufficient gas coverage. Also...for sch.40 the .045 rod seems awfully small. I like using 3/32 or so. Keep practicing

Yeah, I tried to buy the 1/16 rod, but the store was out. I did a search, and it seems like a couple people are using the 3/32 tungsten/rod. I might go ahead and try that out.

Glad to see you just got started. I'm still waiting for my 220V outlet plug at work to be installed.

Bryson, hit my up on aim way to hot , and yes it is over heated it turns grayish when you burn out the cromeum i think it is that keeps stainless from rusting and 3/32 filler and tungsten is to big , stick with 1/16" tungsten , and that .045 rod melts quick so you need to fead it fast , so for you i would go with the 1/16" filler as well ,

Thanks. I just decided to try it out on the standard 115 in my garage. It did 130amps no problem.

Yeah, thats what I thought. I'm sick right now, and have finals next week so I don't think I'll be on AIM for a couple of days. I'll get some 1/16" filler in a week or so and keep at it...

I'm not really sure how I can describe how fast I was moving, but I would have considered it fairly quick. I'll definetly try out more gas.

Wow.

Another question for you guys...Would a gas cup have any effect on this as well? Right now I'm using just the standard one that came with it (can't remember the size).

I would think 30 is a tad to high. To high can be just as bad. I usually set mine around 15cfh.

I remember when i went to school for tig...the instructors would always have you run around ~27cfh...Ive never had one issue running it around ~30cfh...i do run alot lower on aluminum though....

A gas lens will help....but it won't all of a sudden make the color your hoping for just appear...Can't hurt to pick one up though...everything comes with time and experience

I do know when you have it to high it can make a draft , maybe that is what happened , but any where from 30-20 you should be good , i know 20 works for me , my travle speed is not the fastest eather, you will just need to do trial and error

The problem was almost like I had no gas turned on at all, my friend said to lower it ( it was set at about 22psi which is like 18cfh ) and when I lowered it to 15cfh the problem went away. So I did not think that big of a difference would do anything, but it indeed did.

Hrmm good to know.

What size gas cup should I be using with a 1/16" tun/filler? Also, do I need a "gas lense" or just the ceramic nozzle? ...hint hint, tell me what to buy...

Anyone know of a place that sells them online?

Thanks!
Bryson
