Default coolant lines

i noticed that there are two coolant lines going into the cabin through the firewall...one from the thermostat and one from the head...looked under my dash and it seems that they go to the big climate control box...what are they going to? does it have something to do with the ac? because the car previously had ac and i took it off...i also took out the heater core and fan so i dont really need the other big heavy box.....can i just bypass that box somehow and run a coolant line from the thermostat to the head?

i was mistaken when i said heater core..i just meant the two units next to the heater core....i dont really need it anymore ,so i thought i might save a few pounds by removing it...i dont really drive it if its raining so i dont really need any heat
