hey guys

i was just wondering if the oil pan drain plug had a nylon washer of some sort between the pan and the bolt itself? i was looking through the helms and it seems like theres one there, but theres nothing on my car.

does anybody know where i can get a replacement plug / washer?

my car is leaking at the oil pan pretty badly, and i need to change the oil pan gasket. is it safe to get a gasket from napa or some auto store? i dont have a torque wrench, so how should i torque the bolts to spec?

how long does a job like this take providing everything goes smoothly?

ok there is supposed to be a wahser. if u buy ur oil filter from honda, they give u a washer with it (ar at least here they do). its a crush washer and should only be used once cause it crushed it eash time to get a good seal or whatever


as for the gasket, i think ur local place is good, just put some gasket goop on it before u install it and if u dont have a torque wrench, just don go crazy on it and part the bolts

 

i should be able to get everything from my local parts store then right?

i really dont wanna go to honda unless an OEM gasket is recommended.

 

yeah i would imagine the local place gasket is good as long as they can get them, use some gasket stuff tho.

as for the crush washer u can ask them about that, not sure if they will have them or not..

Just put a crush washer on the nut and then hand torque it down.

You need to put a little rtv sealant on the oil pan gasket
Get a torque wrench
Make sure you get a Crush washer, and not a regular washer

should only take a few mins, yet the crush washer is there so you dont strip out the oil plug

 

should be an easy job....I reccomend you definately invest in a torque wrench. Any part store will carry them and they come in handy.

 

no ive changed my oil plenty of times... i was wondering about the whole oil pan gasket part.

but i read some posts in the search and it doesnt seem to bad minus some hard to get to bolts covered by the flywheel etc...

 

When you put the oil pan gasket the only RTV necessary is in the 90 degree points (corners next to the crankshaft) two on the front of the harmonic balancer end and two on the fly wheel end. Just a dab will do. Put iRTV in the oil pan groove then press the gasket into it then add some on the engine side at the same point. Be carefull as it is very easy to over torque the bolts and destroy (squeeze it too tight) the gasket.

 

the most difficult part of my oil pan gasket was taking the header off. with the oem cast header, the bolts get pretty rusty.
PB blaster works great. also don't skimp on the hondabond, or rvt, the gasket will leak and its not worth the trouble to go back and do it again. do not over tigten the pan gasket, it won't seal properly.
