can you fit a sohc tranny into a b16 motor?

Confirmed, no. An SOHC motor (referring to Hondas and Civics, as this is the forum we are in) are D-series. A B16 (hence the name) is a B-series. The motor and transmission are not compatible.

If you are interested in shorter gearing, or perhaps an LSD, there are other D-series transmission options that you can go with.
