Catalytic Converter Replacement on a 98 Accord EX V6 Sedan
Anyone had to have their's replaced? Did you do it at the dealer or did you go aftermarket? If so, how did it go and cost?
My check engine light with the OBD P0420 code came on a few days ago and so I went to have it checked out. I need a new converter and the dealership quoted me the low low price of $910. That's $745 for the converter. This is insane! I asked if it was still under warranty because it's an emissions component and I am at 97,500 miles (hoping still under 100,000 would get it covered by warranty). No luck, they said the warranty runs out at 80,000 or so. 100,000 for good old California but in GA you are screwed at 80K.
Anyway, anyone else had this? I do not want to shell out $910. How good is the performance and FIT of aftermarket? I don't want to have to buy a new exhaust.
I heard from an ex Honda tech the price is high because there are not that many of the OEM converters? Does that make sense?
Any advice or comments is appreciated.
Thanks,

That's is very expensive.
See how much the cat costs at Midas, or mainekee (sp?)
Or go with a hi-glow cat....they are much cheaper than that.

You heard right. You should easily be able to find a factory OEM replacement converter for less than $150.
Thanks for the advice guys. I am going to go with an aftermarket at Midas/Meineke or someplace similar. Is that what you meant by factory OEM replacement converter AFAccord or did you mean the original Honda part?

Right. An autoparts store should be able to order an OEM style converter for your specific car for around $100. No need to pay the $600-$800 for a Genuine Honda converter. Most genuine Honda parts are the best you can buy for your car. This just happens to be one exception.
