Compressor Belt Not Rotating
Hello Folks:
We have a '95 Honda Civic LX with 85K miles. This morning, we heard high pitch squealing sounds coming from the "belts area" of the engine. We also smelled some rubber burining. This evening, the car squealed for a bit then stopped after I started the AC. Although the squealing stopped, the AC does not work anymore. I checked and saw that the Compressor Belt was not moving both with the AC on and off. I know that this belt is supposed to rotate even with the AC off. I do see the belt attempting to move. I am taking the car to the local Honda dealership tomorrow. My questions are:
1. I changed all the belts last year. Is this problem due to a loose belt or is the compressor shot?
2. Let's assume that the compressor is shot: Can I simply remove this belt if I do not want to replace the compressor at this point. I have been quoted >$1000 for compressor replacement and I would rather use this car for a few more months before replacing the auto.
Thanks a bunch in advance

you can find used compressors for about 100 or so. just take it to an a/c shop and have them evac the system, take it home and replace the compressor and belt, return to the a/c shop and have them evac, and recharge.
