Default Sprung weight to suspension softness/stiffness rates

Hello.
I've learnt a little about suspension so far but not the nitty gritty when it comes to finding optimal tunings and such.
Something Ive yet to find out is how to know by the weight in the car and its distribution, the relative range you can work within when adjusting the pressure in the shocks. If someone could point me to some info about itd be bloody awesome because Im lost and cant access college library anymore.
My knowledge at the moment is sketchy at best. I know for drag they should be as stiff as possible whilst still having some give to shake off the forces in the car, but not really how to judge where that stiff figure should be for the weight its carrying. I know that weight transfer can be manipulated and this is probably not an area that should be overlooked.
Anyway thanks for any replies.
