I had 225/40/18 and they rubbed like a bitch. Smaller the better. I had them on two 5th gens and buzzzzzzzz every time i cornered hard.

I think it's just safer to get 45+ offset on 18X7.5 rims if you haven't bought your rims yet. I am on 215/40/17 with 48 offset and don't rub at all. I think it's just cutting it too close with 42 offset.

Sup Greg? I went with 215/40-18 tires on my rims, and I have the same offset as you (+42). The tires rub a little in the front due to that little top clip that holds the splash guards in place. The back rubbed, but after trimming that little tab off, the rubbing has seemed to go away. This weekend I'm going to try to grind down the splash guard clips in the front and see if that helps...it should.
You can go for the 215/35s for extra prevention against rubbing, but in my opinion, there isn't enough sidewall protection for the rims. 225/35s or 225/40s will set you closer to the fender itself, and you may end up looking into rolling/trimming the fender to get rid of the rubbing. That's just my $.02 though...
