question on eggcrate foam and polyfil
Yeah, so I just can't let my project end.
It seems my car has gotten louder and louder inside... road noise etc.. go figure.
Bquieted, all of the side panels of the car, and trunk, just not floor, firewall or roof,
So for the time being the cheapest, lightest solution for slight improvments seem to be egg crate foam under all the panels, and I guess carpet? I wonder about it's use there though... Anyways... I was thinking for the quarter panels in my coupe, and along the sides of the trunk, of filling those spaces with Polyfil or something as well, just to fill the voids... Who knows, might even take away a SMALL amount of sound I hope. Question is though... Is this a BAD idea, could the polyfil somehow get wet in one or both of those spaces, and rot? or is it ok for that? What else would you recommend?
Thanks.

I would just wait and save up for some more sound deadener.Do it right the first time, you wont be sorry.
If you cant i would watch out with the polyfil,if it gets a stray spark or to hot it could bust into flames.
You can buy cheap deadener at Home Depot,i think its called peal n seal,a lot cheaper than dynamt or other brand.Try that first if u cant afford the other ones.Good luck.

Ok, first off, Bquiet did the where I am going to for now, that kind of vibration dampening is done.... I am not going for that cheap stuff. Second, I don't really want to use the nice actual accoustic dampening mat, because it weights about a pound a square foot. And I do not need to spend that kind of cash in this car anyways what I have learned of the results in this eggcrate foam, for at least 2-3 years use.. Which are what I am curious about. The polyfil will definitely NOT get a spark, nor hot being on the inside of the body panels, and if it was so flamable by that sorta stuff.. I doubt it would be used in sub boxes without coverings over the wires. The problem lies moreso in what would happen if it got wet, and would it get wet there.
Still thanks for your reply.

polyfill is not that dangerous, subwoofers get hot enough to melt their own voicecoils and sometimes fires within themselves. if it was as dangerous as you make it out to be, it would not be in subwoofer boxes or used in home pillows. i agree, it will light up real fast once it gets started, but 1 stray spark will not ignite the polyfill. the only real issue i can see using polyfill is that it holds and retains moisture very well. it would not rot, but it wouldnt be effective even if it did not hold moisture. polyfill doesnt really absorb sound waves to begin with.
here is my suggestion, deaden the doors, kick panel and the floor and line with ensolite foam by 3M. it is a closed cell foam rather than open cell like most egg crate. i drive an ITR and i have cut my road noise to less than what a prelude or civic has.
if you need some ensolite i can get some for you as well as raamat. raammat is a very good deadener and very cheap also. $100 for 64 sqft. works damn well for the price.
