92 Accord Auto Tranny
My daughter is the new owner (2 months) of a 92 Accord, driven by a little old man, garaged with 49K miles.
While driving yesterday, the transmission started to slip, the RPM's would go up, there was little and soon no power (Rev or Drive) in any of the transmission positions. We left the car and when I came back to today (fluid level was good); I started it up and drove the short distance home without any problems.
I took it out later in the day and was able to duplicate the symptoms 3 more times(the tranny would work normally for a 1-2 miles, act up and after sitting 5 minutes with the engine shut off, would work fine again).
I stopped by a local tranny shop and his initial diagnosis was the internal filter clogging, causing the tranny not to work and when it's shut of for awhile, the particles settle and the tranny works again for a bit.
He says at this point it looks like a rebuilt tranny is needed. Since I'm new to an Accord, I was wondering if this sounds like a good diagnosisl? Any chance changing the fluid several times might help or if there are any solinoids or computers that might also be causing these symptoms.
Thanks -- Ken

I would certainly try flushing it first (three changes with a few miles between each). If it doesn't work, you haven't lost much. Good luck
BTW use only Honda atf z1, nothing else.

i had to get a new tranny last month or so. it was cold out in the morning and started it up and drove. down the street it tokk about 6 seconds to shift to second. was like that till i got out of the neighborhood. and up to 45. as it was fine for about a mile or two then it took 10 seconds or so to shift. and a few miles more it wouldnt shift into 3rd. eventually it wouldnt shift into 2nd and wouldnt stay in 1st and had to get it towed. so i dont know the point here but i think its just plain cold. and that caused my problem. sorry if this was no help. couldnt find a used/new tranny so had it rebuilt. cost about 1800.
It sounds like the torque converter has started to come apart, your description is an exact match for this problem. I'd get a new torque converter, and then you can remove the case from the trans and clean it all out, then try it again.
Hey my brother has the same problem with his 97 accord. auto tranny also, but his revs up every time he drives. mostly in 2nd gear, the rpm would rev up high then the gears would connect afterwards n go.
keep me posted on what happens, and whats the main problem.
