10pt. Cage in a Hatch Through the Dash QUESTION!
I've been pondering this for a very long time now. I was just wondering how people have their cage go through their dash with a 10 pt. cage and then are able to paint the cage as well. My Idea for this, and tell me if i'm wrong, is to put the whole cage in except cut off the front two bars, that go through the dash, right below the dash so I can still get the dash out. Then I would take the dash out and paint the cage and car. Then I would put the dash back in the car and weld the bottom pieces in with a telescoping piece inside, where the two pieces come together. Then just mask a little after that and paint the rest under the dash that no one will see. Does anyone think this would work out alright? The reason I want to do it this way is because my 92 hatch is completely stripped right now and everything is down to bare metal and I want to have professional paint on the entire car including the rollcage. Here's what I'm talking about...

why not just cut holes in your dash so you can still remove it with the bars in place. much easier to deal with and you can paint the entire thing in one shot. Granted the dash will not be "as" clean...but use your imagination and I'm sure you can pull it off. That's how most people do it. Good luck
why not just put the cage in through the dash and weld the cage up complete . then mask off the dash board and paint the cage ?
you take the tash out to install a cage, you paint the cage befor the dash goes back in, you cut the dash so that the dash can be pulled and replaced.

this is a 92-95 hatch that I put the cage through the vent holes in the dash. This is a 12 point with all the stock interior still in it.This was just masked off and painted And I made aluminum inserts to fill in the vent hole around the tube

what we did was we took the pre existing 4 point cage and got some 1/2 inch thick copper conduit and formed it to where we wanted it to go. then we went to a local guy and had him bend everything up to what the consuit was(pretty primitive but it worked awesome)
then we prepped and painted everything, base coat clear coat (cost 150 bucks)
then took the car to another local guy and had him tig the cage together. what we had to do was since there was gonna be 6x6 plates under the cage anyways, we cut holes in the floor to allow the front of the cage to drop down in order to weld all around the bar, and do it right. then once everything was done, lift the cage up and put the plates underneath, and weld the bar and plates down as well

from my personal experience i told this person for about a year he was crazy for wanting to do this, and he avoided doing it until now. mind you all this was accomplished with the car only leaving the garage ONCE, thats it. not bad and it just doesnt get any closer or any better than this, IMO

Thanks guys for all of your great info. The reason I don't want to just put it through the dash and then mask off the dash is because I want everything behind the dash to be painted when the car is painted. I know it's kinda **** but I just want everything on this car to be perfect. Does anyone else have any pictures of this, either finished or in the process? All the pictures and Info I can get would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jason
