ecu last 3 degit question

what does the last 3 digit mean for an ecu. for example a p28 has the serial number 37820-P28-A02. some others has 37820-P28-A01 or 37820-P28-A51. does it make a difference?? thanks.

if there is a 5 in the middle of the last 3 digits its an automatic.
i believe if its a01 its the first year its made then a02 second year
