Well, since I've already trapped 140mph SFWD, I need to get tech-legal for it
Since all of us trapping 135+ now need to get the chassis certified for 9's, I'm trying to decide what to do with mine.
I've currently got a 6-point rollbar that I had built and installed by Rod at R&D Chassis in penrose, CO a couple years ago. Its made of mild steel. I need to decide what do to: add the remaning points to this to try and make it legal for 9's, or try to hack it out and start over with chromoly. I do want to go through the dash.
Do you think this rollbar is good enough to try to add the remaining points and try to make it legal for 9's? If not, do you think its possible to remove it and start over?
The thing that conerns me the most right now is that the front 2 plates are only 5x6 (whereas I think they need to be 6x6).... can I add a 1x6 strip to the plate and weld it in, or do I need to try to remove those and add a bigger plate?

I dunno..that cage doesnt look half bad..but the front bars that come thru the dash to the floor might be the tricky part with the way the door bars are..unless you go infront of the dash..

I don't think that would help, it has a good start.
Those blue pleather seats might not pass though

i dont know, those welds look a little on the thick and kinda high side, not sure of the penetration on the bar connection.
door bars are "supposed to be" between your shoulder and your elbow when in driving position

exactly...the most important thing is your safety/life. personally, i can name 8 people i grew up with that pass;d away this year because of an automobile accident.
that mild steel cage doesnt look like the weld penetrated the cage, + it's probably eavier than a 10pt chromoly cage, so adding more to it would only weigh the car down more. and weight is not something us 4cyl guys need.
cut the cage out, grind the plates down(cut the 5x6 ones out) and go with a new cage.

First off, thanks for the comments.
I'm not concerned about the "cleanliness" of the cage; my #1 concern is to be able to pass tech and certify the chassis for 9's. It will cost me a lot more $$$ to start over with a new one as opposed to adding to this one, but if I can't properly add to this one then the choice is obvious.
When you say the door bars look "shady", can you elaborate? I.E., are you referring to the shoulder-elbow placement, or something else? I do see it being hard to go through the dash like that though...
Is it possible to cut it out? I mean, I need to be able to put a better one in afterwards; Is there a way I can cut the 5x6 plates out and put new ones in? If so, can you recommend a way to start that?
If I remove it, I'll probably remove it myself to save some cash, and then pay a pro to do the new install (I don't think it would be wise to learn to weld on my own rollcage). How would I go about removing the plates in such a manner that I couple put new ones in?
Do I need to remove the 6x6 plates? If not, how would I clean them up so that I could reuse them (I thought grinding the old welds down would be illegal)

i dont belive i was one saying door bars looks shady, but it does look a little on the "high" side, as if they didnt have the heat up high enough and didnt get enough penetration.
you can grind down the welds on the old plates, then weld new ones in. if you keep the 6x6's grind them down, if you plan on keeping them, just clean them up real nice, try not to get any gouges or anything on them. i think the tech talks about grinding your cage welds down, and then not being enough material or even wearing the tube's thin with the grinder. just keep it clean, and the tech wont give you ****.
