Default Need Reliable car, but looking at cheap crx with problems, Help

Hello all,

I need a really reliable car, and understand that rex's can be so. But I don't have the big money needed here in NYC to buy a really good condition rex( prices over $3,000 easily)
I met with one guy today who has a 90crx si, selling cheap. Mileage is unknown(odometer says 67k, odometer is working) definately not original mileage.
Body wise car is ok, don't really care too much how body is.
Mechanically, check engine light is on? I have the same thing in my van( but know that it is cat., and not much to fix) What are the possible check engine light scenarios with crx ? Valve cover is leaking oil, at what seems a bit excessive?(is it hard to fix this diy style?)
Oil is dark, most definately needs a real extensive tune up, maybe this would fix engine light ?
I don't see any kind of smoke, car idles pretty good seemingly. What could I do with a car like this ?
Sorry for all the questions, any help would be greatly apreciated
P.S. I am dizzy with all the engine monikers, what is the engine monker for this car ( d16a ? )

Confused,
Joseph

Confused,

That car probably needs a new headgasket, and as for the code there is a way to check it. Most likely it is something that can be fixed for cheap.

The engine is the d16a6 most likely, the 108HP 1.6 liter. Great gas mileage, acceptable power for how light the car is too. Lots of engines can be put in the car, I put in my 130HP engine for only $1000. Search the site and find out about possibilities for this car.

Hope I could get ya started.

Thanks all. I don't think I am going to get this car. I really can't afford to invest to much into a car at this point hence motor swaps and all are really kind of out.
I did find an 89 hf in very good running condition with a little over 100k on odometer(true mileage). I should be taking a look at it tomorrow, supposedly has some rust, and some other minor superficial body damage. Most importantly it has factory installed A/C Excellent price, i'll see what happens.
