The DMV kindly requests that I smog my ITR. Is there any way I can get my car to pass even though I have cams, CAI, a JDM 4-1, and a Random Technology cat?

What are the parameters they use for a smog test in California? I heard they only rev the engine up to 3000 RPM. Would I have to lean out my engine excessively? Restrict the air intake? Any suggestions?

well, most places will probably pop the hood and then tell you to go someplace else b/c of the header (unless it's got the heat shield) and the CIA (cai?).

 

dont worry about internals, i dont think there gonna take off ur valve cover LOL

 

Unless you put a heat shield on the header, you will probably fail the visual.

Your cams may also cause you to fail the emissions part of the test, but there is no way beforehand of telling if they will or not.

 

I say this everytime the topic of failing visual inspection comes up...

I went to a $hithole shop that did little but smog inspections with my header, cat, exhaust, cai, and a partridge-in-a-pear-tree and they didn't even bat an eye. Maybe they weren't crooked so much as IGNORANT, but there was no drama or overt/deliberate request for a bribe.

Granted, they ran my car twice and hit me up for a $20 "re-test fee". But on the second run (when the cat was good & hot) I passed the sniffer well within the legal limit.

Do a little legwork...

Now, as far as your cams and such go... some folks have had better running cars AFTER cams (i.e. milage went up, which would infer better efficiency which would infer lower emissions). Put her on the dyno - stick a probe up her 'pipe and find out.

you can fail the visual with the intake? What if you have an Icebox, with CARB sticker on it?

 

The whole point of the CARB sticker is to prove that it is legal.

 

So I assume they run the number in their computer to see if its legal and cross reference it with the Comptech brand.
If not, the sticker is real cheesy that anyone can print in their computer and stick it on any intake, or any part of their choosing.

 

Oh - yes. They are not quite that stupid. The sticker has an EO number that they used to correlate with the master list that they have.

I tried to smog my car today and the shop wouldn't do it because of the CAI, oh but get this, they would do it and pass it for $100 USD. Then I said , are you crazy it should pass just tested and even if it doesn't pass, which it should I'll pay the regular amount, then the guy said, " how about $85 and I'll make it pass". I kept telling him that it would pass and he kept looking for mods. Finally brought the shop manager and he said I don't think the CAI is legal so I won't tested.
But they would do it for $100
It should pass right?, the only mod is the CAI at least engine wise..

 

If the guy is offering to pass it, pay the $$$!!

Aren't the AEM CAI CARB legal?

 

I should have posted a new topic for this, maybe I am confusing. I am not the same member that started this topic. I just added my experience from today trying to smog the R. My only engine mod is the CAI, that is why I ask that it should pass smog.
If it should pass smog with the CAI then all i need to pay is the regular fee of $20 and not have to pay $100.
I'll start another topic, didn't mean to take over this one with something alittle different.....

 

Oh. Well it should just pass normally then. The CAI is legal. Take it somewhere else.

Hey, dimsum, where in CA are you? maybe you can take to the shop I went to if you are cool with cheating. I was actually thinking about reporting them to the DMV just for being morons.

 

It should pass and the shop is just being a dick and rip you off.

I don't think ITR AEM CAIs ever came with a CARB number. One cop I spoke with even went so far as to say that there are no CARB-legal intakes for the ITR. I don't know how much truth there is to that statement, but as far as I know, the AEM intake is not CARB legal. Mine did not come with a CARB number. Did yours?

My AEM came with a carb sticker.

I guess they must came with them later because mine didn't either nor did a friends of mine.

To me I don't think it should be crime to mod your car as long as you pass the sniffer test. Maybe they should pass a tax tariff for depending on how much emissions is being produced by your car and you would pay that every yr during inspection time frame. Here if you drive a electric think cars from Ford you get 30-40% tax break at the end of every yr.

 

CARB sticker alone doesn't mean anything. The CARB sticker must also match the make, model, and YEAR of the car that it is attached to! If it doesn't fulfill all three then it's not legal.
