Sanding Tips?
im looking for tips on the proper way to sand something to get it ready for paint. ill be sanding my rear lip and i dont know where to start? what grits do i use and in what order?
you'll start with the heavier sanding paper and work your way to the finer paper. If you're going to use regular sand paper like most, be sure to rub with the base of your palm and NOT your fingers. Sanding with your fingers will unintentionally cause you to make waves in the plastic from where your fingers put uneven pressure as you rub the sand paper back and forth.

well if u want to buff it to make it shiny u wet sand.when i painted my car i sanded it with 150 then again with 180.if u want it true i would do i all by hand or blck it out cause a d.a can cut grooves in it if u dont hold it flat.some advice if u paint it black like i did u better make sure every bit of body work is right or it will show.remeber black dont hide **** it shows every lil mistake in bodywork that is there.
paint your whole car white then you will never have to worry about dents
iv always found making sure the can and the surface your spraying is at a toasty temperature, worth using a heat gun if its cold where your spraying

Using all those different grit papers just wastes time and do not help the overall end result.
So many people give advise that don't mean ****.
All You have to do is sand the part with some 400-600 grit paper. then clean, then paint. If you want to make it smoother after painting then you can sand with 1000-3000 then polish for a nice gloss.

damn doesnt anyone know what a buffer is anymore. man hand sand it with 1200 and buff it out.u dont want to sand with all them diff grits cause when u buff ull burn right though the paint.once u do that your screwed ull be spotting in that area.
So all this wetsand talk,
it confuses me.
Won't that polish the surface to a gloss if you go all the way up to 1500, or even 3000 like mentioned?
isn't he just talking about prepping for paint?
So wouldnt that be too slick of a surface for the paint?
I thought the wetsanding process was for AFTER it's been painted.
So can we clear that up?
what are the sanding/sandpaper steps needed for PREP before paint?

Basic steps I use...
-wetsand surface with 400-600
-prime
-wetsand primer with 1000
-basecoat
-*optional wetsand with 2000 for imperfections and lay down another basecoat
-clearcoat
-light wetsand clearcoat with 2000
-light buff with 3M rubbing compound
-wax and shine
Sometimes Ill change up to a more finer grit or sand inbetween coats. Depends on the job I do. But thats your basic steps for an average paint job.

Before paint, since hes doing his rear lip heres what I usually do...
-clean/sand out imperfections with 400/600 or rougher depending on the condition of the lip
-if there big dents or gashes I use kitty hair bondo to smooth out the surface (kitty hair is usually the blue green bondo with fiberglass in it)
-wetsand surface with 400/600 till smooth
-prime surface
-wetsand surface with 1000 till smooth
-repeat until your happy
-start laying down your base

i would say use 180, if its in really good shape u might u might be able to use 220.
i sanded mine with 180 then shot an epoxy primer on it the sanded it with 220 and primed and again, dont forget dont oil the d.a before u sand cause it will spit out lil bit of oil on your car.and if u dont wipe it down with a grease and wax remover(u wipe it on then wipe it off before it drys,it gets all the oils, waxes and drit off it.)if u dont 50% chance the paint will fish eye.
