Will any leather jacket do?
I was was in Buckle yesterday and saw an awesome leather jacket style exactly like a biker jacket. Would that provide ample protection? or is there something about buying a really expensive actual biker jacket (like from alpinestar) that's much better and worth the extra money?
Also, what's ur guys' opinions on textile? They seem cheaper and lighter (I might be moving to Arizona). Are they as safe? What about textile gloves?

As well as shitty stitching that will burst the seams.

And they're made of a different grade of (usually thinner) leather with no design for bikers (sleeves aren't any longer and the back of tha jacket isn't any lower, etc).
As cheap as decent gear is, there's just no good excuse for not havin it.

If you were going to opt for a $75 bomber jacket at Wal-Mart, then I suppose A* might look expensive.
Get a purpose-made leather jacket and gloves at the very very very least. The initial cost of gear will come back to you tenfold the first time you crash. I personally spent about $1200-1300 on gear. I bet $1200 is hell of a lot cheaper than spending a few weeks/months in the hospital getting your skin grafts done and plastic surgery to repair your body.

also the balistic fabrics are prettty good when combined with heavy padding/armor, I would suspect that in a few years leather maybe gone altogether

what do you care about money???? There is no price on life buy a Joe Rocket, Alpinestar, Icon or other jacket that is made for bike riding there is a reason it cost more and thats to protect your *** when you fall!!!
Try on as many leather jackets from different manufacturers as you can. Although the sizes will be listed the same, they won't necessarily fit that way (a 48 for JR is not a 48 for RS Taichi).
Textile is ok. More comfortable than leather, and the protective properties are almost as good (depending on the manufacturer). I only use my textile jacket for in-town riding, and leather for any freeway/spirited-riding.

Even from the same brand. My size 50 Dainese supermoto suit fits like body paint. My size 50 Dainese HC-88 jacket is loose on me, almost like my size 52 Dainese Bora.
Yes.. I'm a Dainese *****.
And I will be as long as it's stylish, comfortable, and offer reasonable protection. I consider it designer motorcycle apparel.
But I don't descriminate. I'm looking into a Spidi Basic Black jacket and I own an A* TZ-1 and a Joe Rocket summer jacket.

I care when I'm out of it.
My "regular" jacket saved all the skin on my back when I went down, and looks no worse for the wear. Of course, it isn't a cheap leather jacket you find everywhere, it cost about the same as a Dianese.
If you're going leather, might as well go big(ish), they last a lifetime.
