S2000 accident after 1 day
Hi guys :brokehrt: ,
I have some bad news...
the day before I was like the happiest boy in this world..
23 years old, they tell me i'm good looking,
I just graduated school, work now for 4 months...
And just bought my first car an Honda S2000..
I have also an Yamaha R1, which I share with my daddy..
So I thought, if I can ride an R1, without accidents..
then the S2000 is good for me too...
So I made my wish come true...
A few days ago it snowed, but most snow is melted for 2 days now..
so yesterday , after I had my insurance and numberplate..
I made I ride with my brother, we bought something for my daddy..
after that I drove him home..
and made a trip on myself,.. ent to Brussels to see it at night, from inside my car..
the view was
I liked the car.. it went quite quick enough;.
and the streets were dry..
Succenly i went into the tunnels...this was almost the end of my car's 1st life...
I accelerated from 2nd - 3nd, at +- 60mph = 100km/u
and then my back spinned;. I thought i could keep it steady..
but then my car turned a few times.. en hit the wall in the tunnels 5x
the whole frond is damaged..
the right frontwheel is broken...
A man stopped, and asked if i was ok...
me yes
but the car....
called the police
The police came...and told me, I was lucky to be alive...
I dont know what i'm doing boys...
-is it because of self-esteem?
-no experience?
-the way was slippery at that place..
In fact.. the result = no car.. and still have to pay for it...
-i dissapointed myself, and my family...
-I dont know how my future is gonna be..
-should i stop driving cars and bikes?
-is there a chance to repair my car u think? when the front is damage?
or is it total loss -> - 20 000€ on my bank
-how can I cheer myself up a bit...
because the only thing that keeps me alive now is my family..
suicide was nearbye

Prolly not 100% down to you really. The S2K, despite what the rose tinted HT community will have you believe is a seriously flawed car. Tyre choice is critical as are the pressures, but even when you control these variable the best that you can the car is very unstable in the wet/damp/slippery conditions. I would never have one in Europe for this reason. I honestly believe they are more diffcult to drive in bad conditions than an M coupe, which gets slagged off all the time, yet nothing is said in the general press about the Honda. Apart from Evo that is who actually dont get bankrolled by the manufacturers
You're alive you have insurance so its not all bad. Go try something else. Try a boxster if you want a soft top that handles and wont try and kill you every time you touch the pedal in the damp.

This guy is talking about being $40,000usd in debt + suicide and you tell him to go pickup a boxster...stfu
Hang in there man. I myself have been guilty many times of putting too much focus/worth on cars in my life. This is a material possession, don't let it own your soul.
I know at this time it really sucks. All you can do is take a positive attitude to things. Every minute that goes by is a minute in which you have the opportunity to change things.
You are faced with a problem. Don't waste your energy thinking about something you cannot change. Focus on making the best out of what has happened. Keep paying your car off and take pride in the fact you are manning up to your problems.
It sounds like a write off so start parting your car out.....you could get $4,000 usd for the motor alone.

inexperience has a lot to do with it...
also,
- probably cold tires... (no good in damp/cold/wet weather)
- you might of hit a patch a black ice (who knows) you were in a tunnel and you did say there was snow outside (melted yes) but that doesn't mean there are no possible ice patches on the road here and there, besides when snow melts it turns into water which then turns into ice if it gets cold enough again......(it's the luck of the draw)
and to luke.. the S handles perfectly fine in incliment weather... just don't drive like a maniac and you're fine.... and in the winter time have some winter tires on there like blizzacks and they'll be no worries about your rear end going out on you.. (well of course unless you're a shitty driver or you're driving like a nutcase)
p.s. i've driven on summer tires s02's for two winters with absolutly no problems, rear end never stepping out, and never losing the rear end... why is this..
1. cause i have proper air pressure in my tires
2. i make sure the tires are warmed up and to operating temperature before i even think about pushing the car a little harder
3. i don't drive like a maniac in the winter time with summer tires
4. i know my personal limits in this car

Don't worry i'am pretty sure insurance will take care of it. At least you are ok and nothing happened to you. There are many more better things to come in the future its not the end of the world
. You can lean from this accident so you won't do it again.

totally agree with this...I'm going with col tires being the cause of his accident. The rear end coming out between shifts would mean cold tires. He could have hit a black ice patch but usually the officer would look around for that

If you haven’t had an S2K move on you in poor conditions then you should write to the Guinness Book of Records, Unbelievable Entries and Amazing Feats Section
I don’t know about you but I always have my pit crew there in the cold mornings before I go to work. Yes it may cost several thousand pounds to employ them and the neighbors moan about the wheel guns upsetting their pets but that’s what S2000 ownership is all about, compromise. After the weather analysis over breakfast is complete we choose the tyres for the trip. In the 10 miles to work we must be careful with our strategy. Get dressed then run to the car, wheels on warmers off and jacks down. AT the 5 mile point I will then stop and my support vehicle staff will check the temps and I will offer my engineer a quick debrief about the journey so far. With all the data in another 1000 rpm can be used taking us to nearly 2500 rpm. Soon at work the car is then put on the ramp and turned around for the next journey, a tricky little run to Burger king.............
We are talking about a run of the mill car not some sporting icon running cut slicks at the track! I have traveled in more stable boats in my time and it’s not just moving in corners that affect it, standing water is a nightmare. They are light stiffly sprung cars, therefore they react badly without mechanical grip which is obviously what they rely on rather than decent suspension.
You don't agree that’s great, this poor guy just lost his car and many others on s2k have reported the same, those that drive them on the road in bad conditions and don’t use them as toys that is. I am sure that people can all be really smart and wax on about 'people not being is super frosty kewl formula HT drivers' like they are but the reality is that the car is way too skittish.
There is little point in arguing in here as the old Honda tint affects owners, one day perhaps when you drive a few others you will have a different opinion, maybe not. Can’t see the point myself of spending £20K on a car and then having to baby-sit the damn thing during winter, each to their own. As for the other guy moaning about me offering another car as an alternative he said he had insurance, it is not clear if this was comprehensive or not. If it was then write it off and move on. Either way I have written cars off and know what a gut wrencher it is, its just one of those things.

^ guess you chose not to read my post properly, and you tend to put words into my mouth...
1. i never said the S was the best... yes i have driven cars that handle better then the S in cold, wet, damp, whatever type of incliment weather..... all i stated that you can drive the S perfectly fine in incliment weather as long as you're not being an idiot on the roads..
2. you're little pit crew explenation is over exagerated..... you get blizzacks winter tires for the winter.. pure and simple.. you're not going to swap them out every day that it's nice out.. you put them on the beginning of winter you take them off when spring rolls around.....as simple as that.... and don't drive like an idiot...
3. who ever said anything about slicks?? no one... thats your asumption.. if you read my post clearly.. you can easy see that i stated s02's... are those slicks.. no they are not... and i clearely stated i was on s02's several times....
4. i've never had the S step out on me in incliment weather becuase like i stated in my original post... "I KNOW MY LIMITS IN THIS CAR".. and I DON'T DRIVE LIKE AN IDIOT IN INCLIMENT WEATHER.... is it that hard to understand??
5. you asume that i don't drive this car in the winter.. however i guess you failed to read the part where i said i've gone though 2 winters on s02's.... and yes i drive my car daily... and yes i still do push it in the winter time..(so i don't babysit it) however the times i push it i know my tires are properly warmed up so they will stick...
6. i'm not the only one that has driven the car in incliment weather with no problems..... you do realize many people drive this car in rain with absolutly no problems?? i mean come on. if people were having so many issues in the rain wouldn't that mean that everyones car would be in some junk yard collecting dust at the moment....
7. use your head, the S is a great handing car IF handled properly. (yes it's NOT the best) but it can hold it's own with the PROPER driver behind the wheel regardless of the weather.. rain or shine, snow or sleet....

I enjoy driving it, and have not had a single incident *knock knock*. If people would take some courses or at least take their cars to an auto-x or the tracks, they'd learn much more about their cars and it's capabilities and limitations.

also keep in mind.... most of the wrecks that you see.. or hear of people losing their S due to a horrible accident involving their rear end sliding out on them.. are.......
1. new to the car (just got it within a couple months..
2. have never driven a RWD car before
3. are kids doing stupid crap (since you can pick up an S for $17k now, it's easily accessable)
4. and a few people just not being able to control it properly... pushing the car to THEIR PERSONAL LIMIT (NOT the cars limit)

Yeah, exactly. The last one I've read was about that kid who gunned it in a wet parking lot and crammed the car under a parked semi.
He'd only had his car a short period.
And I fail to see Luke's point of view of the S2k being a "flawed design." Ever taken a peek at the results for AS?

No I dont, infact nobody I know has different compounds for the cold season. If it snows, and is bad I use chains. If its just cold, black ice and all the great things of winter then I can see how having tractor tyres is going to help anyway?

And the point was it is a road trye, therefore it doesnt need to be worried about, i.e it really isnt that sensitive to temp change.

There you go again with the tyre temp thing. So when do you 'push it' what sort of ballpark should we all be aiming at for temperature here? S2k's are not good in the wet/damp/slippery conditions, thats the fact of it and it is not difficult to lob one into the hedge without warning from it.

6. i'm not the only one that has driven the car in incliment weather with no problems..... you do realize many people drive this car in rain with absolutly no problems?? i mean come on. if people were having so many issues in the rain wouldn't that mean that everyones car would be in some junk yard collecting dust at the moment....
</TD></TR></TABLE>
It is the single biggest reason I never purchashed one. In the dry I could forgive the numb steering and low feedback. In the wet it makes things frustrating. I am sure I could drive one around but I know I would never enjoy it, whats the point in that? I think if you took a survery of all s2k's many would be weekend cars, which would explain away the lack of junk.

7. use your head, the S is a great handing car IF handled properly. (yes it's NOT the best) but it can hold it's own with the PROPER driver behind the wheel regardless of the weather.. rain or shine, snow or sleet.... </TD></TR></TABLE>
Well I am sure beleive that, I really do. However to even suggest that it is any good in the snow kind of ruins your little dig about the rest of the world not being proper drivers and not understanding. I dont need to study it, I drove a couple and they were below average in the wet so I stuck with what I had which is something better.

Take a read.
Don't worry, man.
I know its tough, I' ve been in such situation myself, I didn't even talk to anybody for a month.
It was a rainy day and I drove like a maniac after few meters of hydro-planning the car turned in 180 degrees slipped off the road and flipped over. It all happened at very high speed.
After this accident I understood that I was too much attached to the car, and I also understood that I drive like an idiot, so I changed few things in my life and now everything is O.K.
P.S. After half a year, I repaired the car then drove it for 2 months and blew the engine. Now I am spending most of my free time in garage rebuilding the engine.
Hang in there pal,

Dude, you've driven a couple of times in the wet or snow, and you base your assumption of the car on that? Were they properly set up for the winter or wet conditions? There are numerous members that drive the S2k in the snow. And I'm talking SNOW. (look up xviper on S2ki. He's up in Canada) You can't complain about how you need to change out the tires for the given situation. It's like taking a stock Jeep and saying it sucks in rock crawling. Like 03s2kblue said, proper set up and driving with some common sense will result safety and fun.
ya its cause you/ve made idiot move, should've just parked the car till spring. But everyone makes mistakes, just have to learn on others. You dont drive RWD in snow and going fast like you were
It can be hard to keep the back end behind the front end in an S. Anything but travelling in a straight line (braking and accellerating) can easily lead to a spin if you aren't careful. Everyone that drove mine or my brothers s2000 in an autox spun it at least one time if I remember right. Actually, I drove mine for a while, then drove a civic for a few months, went back to the S and spun it on my first run. It's easy to forget just how important balance is in that car.

I know you prolly love your car, and I know you probably are never going to be unbiased judging its weaknesses but as a potential buyer all the cars I tested were given the same time. Of course I based it on impressions gained from reality. I tried stock cars from a dealer, the later car was better IMO. I want to like them I really do it should be a perfect step between a stripped out bathtub like the Elise and the more expensive boxster, but it doesn't do the job unless its a. dry, b.smooth....for £25K this is unacceptable to me. If it is snowing it is one thing, if its just wet you really expect me to have to worry that much about car setup in a road car on road tyres, travelling at road speeds?

Luke just needs to learn to drive.. it's as simple as that.. if you can't keep the S on the street in the rain.. then you're a horrible driver... so it either that or you're just an idiot driver thinking your on top of the world and you need to be faster then everyone else out there..
it's amazing how you've only driven the car 2 times.. and yet you think you know all the handling characteristics of it and swear to your god that it can't handle anything...
and yet you still fail to read my complete post and you fail to understand every point.... but then again.. you're taking bits and pieces out of every statement i've made....
and if you've never seen people swap out tires in the winter then i dunno, guess you don't know to many people.... go on s2ki... tons of people swap out their tires in the winter time.. it's common sense, especially if there's a chance you'll get stuck in a snow shower...and you're not going to put chains on a "sports car", besides no one uses chains anymore, it's a waste.. especially when there are snow tires out there now that are better then having chains wrapped around your tires.... live outside the box will ya and join the 20th century...
it takes common sense and a skilled driver in order to drive the S in incliment weather.. and obviously you're not one of them...

What you have to understand is that the S2000 is set up to be driven recreationally. It wasn't designed as a primary vehicle. While it can certainly be used as such if you take the right steps, it was designed as a weekend roadster kind of car.
So they soften up the Boxter's suspension and put all seasons on it so that the same people that never put the top down during the summer can ride around in their Porsche during the winter without swapping tires, doesn't make a vastly superior car. Just one that was designed to be a little bit more comfortable and convenient.
You say that the S2000 is fundametally flawed because it does not make a good all-weather commuter vehicle off the showroom floor. I say that its not a flaw because the car wasn't designed for that.

Hell I BOUGHT my S2000 in the rain :D
I've never gotten into trouble in the rain on either the stock S0-2's, or my Advan Neova AD07s
Maybe I just don't get on the car that hard BECAUSE ITS RAINING

I am so sad about this I won't be able to sleep tonight. You are so kewl you are not even on the normal scale. I suggest you contact the FIA immediately and tell them to invent a class above F1 just for s2000 drivers as you are soooooo talented. Get over yourself.
The car isnt that great, it is for you because you get off on telling people you are the worlds greatest driver as you can tame the 'beast'. Just for your info a car that has that little shove in it below 6K but can still shake the rear end is not the last word in chassis dynamics. Oh and still waiting for the tyre temps you run there........
In the meantime take your foot out of your mouth. Until you have seen how I drive and what/where/when I would suggest a slightly more thoughtful approach. You being all of 23yrs old have probably covered less than a third of the mileage I have so far. Thius being most of Europe and lots of Eastern, Mid West US in different seasons I think I am able to drive pretty well, and dont need a 23yr old pup to tell me differently. Take yourself to the track in the wet and tell me how you get on, thats if you can risk eating a bit of humble pie.
You have bought into the fantasy that the s2k is some kind of iconic sports car, the marketing people have done well with you, although with a brain composed largely of air made up with arrogance and touch of *** for balance they never had to work all that hard truth be told. You say common sense makes up part of the 'godlike' qualities of s2k driving ability, it is amazing you can find the start button if this is really the case. As a road car it is deeply flawed IMO, and not just me but others in this thread and the HT community have said the same. No we are not as kewl as you, but even factoring that in not everyone can be wrong.
Anyway......go on with your bad self there, give your friends a pat on the back from me and get them a beer, they deserve it.
