snow tires
Just passing the word along that if you own a newer Civic LX or EX with size 195/60R15 for winter.. get your snow tires soon. They are becoming rare very quickly, a lot of the major snow tire companys didn't produce enough or ANY of this size yet. My Dad owns a tire store and we are having trouble getting any at all.. and with the amount of new Civics around its just going to get harder.
i imagine it depends on where you live on avalibility. In pacific north west we have TONS available. Hell in 205/50/16's alone we had 3 different styles , and one style 2 sets in stock. I just mounted up 4 on my car this last weekend. But then again i work for the largest tire dealer in the pacific north west, we rarely run out of anything
my $.02:
i lived in a lake effect area for 8 years. snow is measured on feet, not inches.
snow tires should be NARROWER than stock. ideally you want mount them on a "garbage" wheel. i have (had until last weekend) 14" steelies mounted with 185/70-14 snow tires. i drove home for the holiday last week. we had 12" of snow while i was there, plus i drove through some of that crap drving up there in the mountains in VA and WV. i had NO problems at highway speeds. in fact, driving from my brother's house on the lakeshore to my wife's parents on thanksgiving, i was easily doing 70mph on snow-covered highways.
14" snow tires are cheaper and easier to find than a low profile 15".
the narrower tires will cut through the snow and slush much better than a stock-sized or wider tire. having them mounted on separate wheels will save you money in the long run because your daily wheels won't become sandblasted and chipped from salt and sand, not to mention saving damage from frost heaves and pot holes.
fortunately, i left my snow tires and wheels in michigan so my mother could use them. i never plan to go back there i the snowy months again...if i do, i'm flying.
185-70-14 tires are about equal to a 195-60-15.
