Default Did you buy your caR to make up for something else?

When you bought your caR, did you buy it to make up for something else you might have been missing in your life? Maybe even something you couldn't/can't put a finger on? I've been thinking about it pretty hard. My car doesn't make me happy anymore, but for the past 7 months that hasn't really mattered. Well now I lost something that makes me happy, and it is making me want to find some material replacement. I can't afford to build a house which I want to very badly and I can't afford a lot of stuff. But I can almost rationalize selling my car and forking out almost all of my earnings just to have this stupid ghost in my dreams. Then again I don't want to. I want to save for other things, and am wondering if that something might find me again, which would then make buying a caR a dumb idea as I would have no money for other things. I don't know what to do.

It's like I have a void in my life. It was there for a long time but I didn't care because I didn't know what it felt like. Well now that I know what it feels like to have that void filled, I want to fill it again, even if it is only temporary. But I hate that at the same time, temporary. I'm a pretty rational thinker though it might not seem like it now and a lot of other times. But I can't (or maybe I just don't know) what to do about this... problem.

So back to my question to answer it, I would be buying it to fill a ghastly void that has crept up on me with no warning leaving me lost, alone, and confused.

(edited for grammer since I'm being picky with myself)

I bought my R because I have been a Honda fan for over 10 years, not to fill a void in my life. Money doesnt make you happy it only alows you access to things and services that only appear to temporarly fill voids in your life. I bought my ITR because I finally had enough money to pay cash for an R. I hate having to make payments for things. When you buy something, it only gives you a high for a certain amount of time and then that wears off and you are in the same mental state that you were in before you bought the item. Buying a house is very similar. My car habbit is not filling a void, it is a hobby that I love. I enjoy driving it, working on it and tinkering with it at the dyno on occasion. It is a very fun car to own and does make me happy to have the privelage to own one. However, if I did not have the car I still would have all of my friends and family to keep me busy and happy. Actually, I am finding that I have less and less of the free time I used to to tinker with my car and more and more time spent with friends and family. I guess what I am saying is that it is just a hobby for me that I enjoy. I have had many different hobbies during my life however, my love cor cars has never died. You will always have friends and family around to support you, if you want. I dont think material objects is what can ultimately make people happy, they are just there to make life more fun. Just my opinion

Do what you need to do so that you ensure a good future for yourself.

I wish I would have thought that years ago. It's not easy to not be impulsive and not feed all your desires (im talking the financial ones) at the moment, but if you don't have a plan, it can be damaging to your future. Not to say you can't be somewhat impulsive, but have a plan. Have goals. Find out what you can/cannot spend without jeapordizing what you want in your future.

Chris - who got his R to pick up a beautiful young lady in '01, and it worked for about 6 months. Then we went our seperate ways and I started modifying it. Then I met you jerks. It's all her fault.

I loved them and wanted one since I first saw a neighbor with one in '97. I was 17 then and when I finally got my job after college I started looking for one. The car is great but it doesn't come before family and friends as a car shouldn't. However these cars are special as we all know and we get attached to them, more than you would be attached to even an M3 in my opinion.

Does the car make up for something missing? No.
Is the car something I aspired to own enjoy and take care of? Yes.

I think you're thinking about this entirely too much.

I figured after three 95' GS-R's in various forms, it was time to step it up. Also the price I bought from Len was way too hard to refuse.

Rent a car. For a week. Or longer.

Think you are tired of your car and another one will suffice. Take some of that money you are itching to spend, and go rent a car. Get the rental insurance.

As stupid as it sounds, it will afford you the option of driving something else for a while to get away from your car, without making a drastic change in life such as selling it and committing to payments for another, etc.

If, after that week, or two.. however long you need to do something different, you still feel the same.. then re-evaluate your own situation based on your needs.

I've had 20 something cars, and if someone had given me the advice I'm giving you now, that number would be no more than 5.

Good luck.

Well, I've been a diehard fan of the ITR since it's arrival on our shores. I tried getting one every year but I couldn't justify the price brand new.

I bought mine used Oct/03 and I considered it a treat to myself for getting clean & sober. The time was right in my life and I was in the right financial position to "live the dream" so to speak. I've never looked back

I feel your pain Chris. When I bought my R, I had no idea what the car was about. I'd never owned a Honda and I hadn't even heard of the type R. All I knew was it was better than the gs-r I initially test-drove. My R started as a means to an end - enjoying the daily drive.

Over the years the R became an end in itself: the community, the hype, and most of all it created and filled a "void" in me which is track driving. First hpde's, then eventually scca. Over the past 12 months, not having driven the R much at all, the R has actually created a void in me that now overshadows the void of not having it around to drive. The theft issue that we all struggle with hit too close to home for me (literally) and I haven't been able to get over it. That's why I'll be selling mine shortly. I intend on finding another car that will fill the void of needing a fun weekend/hpde car, but without the theft issues.

It took me the better part of a year to reach my decision. Like everyone says, take your time and don't rush your decision.

I drove all the way to Atlanta in December 1999 to buy my 00 ITR mainly because the sales manager at Crown Acura in Richmond told me that I would never be able to get one.

Never regretted it, though.

I bought my ITR because there were no more Civic Sis left.

I felt bad about owning such a capable car for a while, until I dinged it up a little and took it to the track. Now I have no more guilt.

I think i know what you mean aquafina. I bought my last car for a similar reason. I had just split with a long tern GF, was feeling toatlly dejected and low and decided to sell the car i had only bought 5 months before hand and buy a JDM Si-VTEC integra. Really and truely the month or two i spent looking for the right car and then buying it really did fill a void, and fortunately for me it also allowed me to get over her without too much trouble. As for what you should do, then dont let your head rule your heart. If you know its not financially wise to buy another caR, then dont. It may temporarily fill the void but it may also only last a few weeks/months, then your right back where you started except with less money on your pocket. I was in a fortunate position in that i didnt have any money worries and so acquiring material possessions weren't going to leave me less well off. Dont make any hasty decisions.

I'm a dealer though, so paying retail for a car is unheard-of When I was looking a them they were around 37-38K CAD.
I bought a 5.9L Dakota R/T instead, put an I/H/E combo on it, beat the **** out of it, then sold it 2 years later for 2k more than I paid originally. Dealer rebates pwn

Naw, orginally I was going to buy a white G-SR and paint it yellow. The sales man at the dealership asked me why? My reply was I wanted a yellow car. The sales man at the dealership told me to hold on for 5 more months cause they were going to have a yellow integra coming to the dealership and I was . Never bought it to make up for anything.

Maybe u need a girlfriend? maybe not, i dont know

your profile says ur 18.

So since you dont have enough money for something expensive, just buy a 92-95 civic hatch and put in a b18c. that would make any 18 year old happy
