Buying a 98 Teg LS..
I am in final stages of negotiation on a 1998 Integra LS. The car has about 72,000 miles on it...Its 5 speed, power everything, bone stock everything...from floor mats to wheels. The current owner is an older gentleman, about 40, selling becasue he just had a 3rd kid and his wife wants mini-van. He has all reciepts for work been done. It silver...my questions are this..
While test driving the car i noticed a few different things...
1. Power sunroof is VERY slow to close, could the motor be burning out?
2. I drove to car for a good half an hour. The temperature gague NEVER went above 1/4 from cold. most of time it sat in "cold". The owner has replaced the radiator and i assume that if the thermostat needed replacement the mechanics would have done it at the same time. Could it be thermostat or what do you think is the problem?
3. Spark plugs and wires? If the plugs have not yet been done, I havn't pulled one to check yet, are they platinum tip?? What kind of plugs would you guys recommend for that car?
4. The front suspension squeeks quite loud when going speed bumps at more than a couple mph...the springs and shocks look to be in good condition, but the car has not been driven more than 5k miles in past 2 years could it just be stiff??
Thanks so much guys!! Hopefully I'll be driving a nice teg this week!

1. i would say it will eventually burn out. in my experience, these things tend to get slower and slower and then just stop.
2. I wouldnt worry about this because mine pretty much does taht unless i am in very hot weather and the highest ive seen it go is right in the middle.
3. OEM
4. See if you can get under the car or possibly take one of the wheels off. Check if anything is rubbing or looks abnormal.
How much is he asking?

At night my ls stays super cool, like what your describing, during the normal warm day its right before the middle. Sorry i cant answer your other questions.

Alright yeh it was a very cool morning when i drove it and i drove it upto the snow line so i figured it would run cooler but i didn't think it would stay in "cold" the whole time...I'll test it on my next drive, take it for a good hour and let it idle for a bit to see if i can get the rad fan to kick on.

How much does it cost to replace the sunroof motor?? any idea?
OEM. alright, so just order the plugs from acura dealer?? Id perfer to use NGK platinum or iridium tips or something as they last alot longer than OEM plugs
I am going to bring it to my buddys garage and use his hoist to pick it up and see if we can figure out what the noise is...it wouldn't be engine mounts needing replacement would be?
He is asking a little over $7,000. im sure i could get him down a little bit... figure its a preaty good price considering condition and never been in any accidents or anything...

you could probably get a good used one for about 50-60 bucks. maybe cheaper, check ebay and junkyards. As for the plugs, i would just go to napa or something. You may not even need to replace them. You would feel if you needed new mounts before you would hear it. And if you could hear it im not sure what it would sound like. lol. Yea but thats not a bad price for the miles and condition. Try talkin him down 500 bucks for the sunroof motor and go from there.

Yeh im gonna try bring him down about $500....gonna compression test it all too to make sure all cylinders are runing 170+ PSI and stuff, still curious as to what that squeeking is......Im stoked!!

Spray the tracks with WD40 or silicone lubricant - do this every 3 months or so. The tracks collect dirt when you have the sunroof open. I have a '96 that behaves the same way.
2. I drove to car for a good half an hour. The temperature gague NEVER went above 1/4 from cold.
That's normal too.
3. Spark plugs and wires? If the plugs have not yet been done, I haven't pulled one to check yet, are they platinum tip?? What kind of plugs would you guys recommend for that car?
Iridiums are pricey, but last a long time.
4. The front suspension squeeks quite loud when going speed bumps at more than a couple mph...the springs and shocks look to be in good condition, but the car has not been driven more than 5k miles in past 2 years could it just be stiff??
Mine does this too and it's annoying. I have KYB AGX shocks and Eibach springs that are less than a year old.
Last time I did a compression test on my b18B1, I got 205 on all 4 cylinders. At the time the motor had 127k miles on it.

im pretty sure your just not supposed to spray white lithium grease on the tracks...baddd things...
the squeeking could be your bushings or a number of things

Lubricant helps the sunroof close at normal speeds - what could possibly be bad about that?

Tim2179: Thanks alot for your replies. Gives me a better idea of whats going on comming from someone with the same car. I'm compression testing it tomorrow (today did not work for the owner) and i'll be putting it on the hoist and taking a look "up her skirt" if you will...make sure everything is clean up there..
As for spark plugs, iridiums are pricey and from what I have been reading in another post on this forum I should just stick with NGK V-powers...seems that they are the best plugs for the job...thanks...

Humm. So it seems fairly common that the front end squeek over large speed bumps...You guys figure its the bushings??Id assume they are cheap, i'll ask about that tomororw before i go pickup the car, good stuff to bring the price down a bit.
Depending on how bad you wanna lower the asking price, you could quote him the cost of replacing the sunroof motor, replacing the shocks (since they squeek) and then deduct that from the sellers asking price. Even if the negatives aren't that bad - make sure you point them out when negotiating the final sale. I got mine for $1100 under the sellers original asking price.
Also, it never hurts to bring attractive females w/you when buying a car. It def helps when negotiating!

Yeh id like to get him to come down that much but hes an older gentlemen and i think he would just say, ok i'll keep it...its not like he can't afford it or anything, he never drives it, its just sitting there in his garage, has only seen 7k miles in past 2 years....i'll try and throw an offer of cash at him, about $1200 below asking price, but i don't want to insult him...cause its in very good shape... and i don't want him to tell me to get lost =p

true enough, i think i'll offer him what i want to pay with the stuff that needs to be fixed, and see what he says, i'll bring some extra cash just incase he wants more. He seems to be very reasonable so hopefully we can meet somewhere in middle, cause i don't really wanna walk away from the car as its by far the cleanest one ive looked at and ive looked at 8 of em so far...most are modified and bagged to hell and have bad syncros or a numerous other things.

yeah, i spent 8-9 months looking for a CLEAN GSR, but ended up with an uber clean LS. youll be happy for the first year, but then you'll want turbo or vtec. hah</TD></TR></TABLE>
Not likely...Im not into making cars go fast. I ride bikes so it would cost a fortune to make a car anywhere near as fast as my bikes.
but yeh, its hard to find a clean integra thats for sure, soo much crap on the market from people modifying em and beating the crap out of them
