Hi Folks...CV joint assistance please?
Hi, I'm new to this forum - just found out about it yesterday in fact.
I'm in the process of removing the CV joints from my '91 integra and I've come to a standstill - how do you get the joint off of the shaft (without damaging the shaft)? My previous cars had a circlip that held the joint in place. Does you remove the Integra's by tapping it with a hammer??
Thanks for the help!

which joint are you trying to remove? the one that goes through the hub or tranny?
the one that goes through the hub needs to be hit out, and the one through the tranny just slides out.
when you are hitting the cv joint that goes through the hub, you need to hit it hard since it has a c-clip locking it on the shaft.

Thanks for the quick response, six-speed.
Yeah, I'm taking off the outside joints. I kind of figured they needed to be hit, but I was reluctant to do it before hearing someone else confirm.
Do you have suggestions about where/how to hit it so that it's not damaged?
Thanks

yea just pop it with a hamme squarely, or you can use a punch or screw driver to hit it with in the dimple

Cool, now I've got the joint off, the ball bearings out, and I'm trying to get the cages out. They don'e come out simply by turning them to the side. Suggestions? These joints always impress me - they're like those tricky sculptures from Africa and China that have carved animals within carved animals. How do they do that?
I can't tell you right offhand since it's been a while since I've had one apart. But I can tell you to just play around till it comes out. I've spent quite a bit of time swearing and fiddling getting various CV's apart (and even worse... back together! lol)
