Default how to tell if stock speaker wires are in alright condition

the stereo in my 1990 si hatch isn't working right. barely any sound, and all fuzzy.

i looked at the old speakers, they were ****, so i replaced them

stereo is still really quiet with no sound from the drivers speaker.. so i swap in a known good head unit from my accord

same problem...checked the continuity in all the speaker wires and they are all good...what to check now??

SUMMARY: known good head unit, speakers, and have continuity in wires to speakers, but sound is quiet and staticy and almost nothing from the drivers speaker

ON the EF forum people are recommending that i replace the wires...this seems like a huge pain in the *** and the wires have continuity. is another wayt to check if the wires are alright? i dont want to spend a lot of time replacing them if they are fine. This is NOT a high powered system, just the head unit and a speaker in each door

Continuity doesn't tell you a whole lot. If they're shorted out or messed up pretty bad, they'll still show continuity. Resistance might be a better indicator, but IMO the best indicator is that there is a problem with the speakers as you've described. You've done a good diagnosis.

Replacing the wires is not a pain in the ***. It's recommended even on good stock wires. Stop being lazy. The problem's obvious.

alright, any guidance as to how to feed the new wires?

I'd like them in the stock sleeve between the door and body. Do i need to cut part of the white plastic connector to leave room to pass the wires thru the door?

I have things apart but rather than blunder on from here id like to have a plan

i head back to college tommorrow evening so i have to get this done during the day

There's a good how-to over at Integra.net. But basically there's a spot on the harness plug between the door and the body where you can drill a hole to run the speaker wire through.

It's a worthwhile mod. You'll be glad you did it later.

If the wires are good you don't need to replace them.

Did you do a continuity check to ground on each speaker wire?
Unplug the HU and speakers and check for short, [continuity] to ground on each speaker wire, [8 of them] there should not be any.

Did you check for impedance of each speaker wire?
With HU and speakers unplugged, set meter to 200 ohms, [less if your meter has it] and check resistance between speaker end and HU end, you should get a reading very close to 00.0, [ 00.1 to 00.3 would be normal] all 8 speaker leads should be very close to the same, [within .2]

Did you check for continuity between the pos. (+) and neg. (-) leads, or any of the leads to each other?
With HU and speakers unplugged check for continuity between any of the wires, there should not be any.

Did you check for impedance?
Plug speakers in, at the HU harness check for continuity to ground on all 8 leads, then set meter for 200 ohms, [less if your meter has it] and check each set of speaker leads, [each speaker] you should get a reading of about 4 ohms +/- , they should all be very close to the same.

If all the above are good, the problem has to be someplace else. 94
