go to http://hybrid2.honda-perf.org/tech/zcinfo.html that should give you all the answers
this may also help http://asia.vtec.net/topics/zc.html
I know that I read something specific one time about the different coloured stock valve covers on the DOHC ZC's
ahh here it is http://hybrid2.honda-perf.org/....html
it says "The black top bolts into the 4g cars, whereas the brown top is the 3g version."
brown top zc came from the 1st gen integra and will NOT fit without you using custom made motor mounts. plus i believe the they are rated at a lower horsepower.
the black top is what he wants seeing how its a direct drop in for the 88-00 single cam civics/crxs

The 2g blacktop zc ENGINE might be a direct swap for an 88-00 sohc civic/crx, but you can't bolt ANY dohc HEAD to a 88-00 sohc BLOCK. They have different head bolt patterns.

hes correct they did come with less hp. They are rated at 119. Def not worth it</TD></TR></TABLE>
bzzt. Wrong answer.
The brown top ZC is rated at 135 PS (133hp)
A black top ZC is rated at 130 PS (128 hp)
...and no I didn't get that backwards. The earlier ZC was factory rated for more hp.
A 88-89 D16a1 from a 1st gen Integra was rated at a close to your quoted amount at 118 hp but guess what? It had a black valve cover. The 86-87 Integra had a brown valve cover but it only made 113 hp.

if i post up some pics of the head without the valve cover would someone here be able to tell if it was the black or brown valve cover because i saw it today and the cover is sanded down but some parts look like it was a black top i see no sign of brown even though he says it was a brown top.
Normally I'd smack you with "search" for yourself but I'll let you off the hook since the common term "ZC" is too short for our search function. The 84-87 crxs/civics etc got the browntop, as detailed here:

With all the misinformation spread across the internet, this post is to clarify the misconceptions about “ZC” engines.
In earlier “Hybrid” years (1996-1997) many people were buying DOHC 1590cc engines stamped “ZC” from engine importers. These engines were popular upgrades for Civic/CRX chassis providing ~130ps with bolt in ease. This engine was called “THE ZC” for quite a number of years, and even today people still consider this twin cam the ONLY ZC. Engine importers received a variety of other engines stamped “ZC”. The “ZC” stamp alone cannot identify the engine’s designation. The only thing one can assume is that ALL engines stamped “ZC” displaces 1590cc. “ZC” stamped engines were offered with a number of design variations throughout the years of production.
Here’s a TIMELINE of the different “ZC” engines manufactured that I have noted thus far:
1984-1987
DOHC ZC MPFI 9.3 CR 135 ps / 6500 RPM ( Integra Gsi, Rsi, Civic / CRX Si)

idiot.
anyway, black top/brown top, still wont fit over your 1.5 d15b2. DOHC and SOHC dont match.

the head on the left is a black top and the one on the right is a brown top (in this case it is dirty) - the red circles are where the distributor bolts on - the blue circles are where the Cylinder Position Sensor bolts on - which one does it look like?
