alternator problem

alternator problem
can the alternator go bad, and still not have the battery light on the cluster not go on?
reason i ask is because whenever i unplug the battery my motor dies, but the battery light on the dash doesnt lit.
i dont have a voltmeter or else i woudve of been good.
can there be any other option, i am about to buy a new alternator.
all grounds are good. and all plugs are where they are supposed to be.
