Default how are icon helmets?

well im in the market to buy a new lid, i was looking at shoei or arai but i was surfing cycle gear and found an 06 icon for only 190. my cousin has an icon helmet and i put it on and its pretty f*ckin comfortable. im just wondering about how they would be in a crash compared to a 600 helmet like an arai i was looking at.

this is the icon one i was looking at

OR

shoei x-11 or rf-100

or an arai rx-7 corsair

as long as it is DOT and Snell approved they should be fine. I really dont see the purpose of spending so much money on a helmet other than for bling. For the most part as long as they have been tested they should hold up under most circumstances. IMO

Everyone I know that has gotten one thinks they're crap. They're loud and the tabs where the visor connects to breaks easily. Ventilation isnt great either.

when i had my cousins on i could see it fogging up but that was when i was just standing there....when i was riding, it it seemed fine as far as venting and sound go, im mostly worried about if i crash how theyll hold up compared to a shoei.

i mean theyre dot and snell approved so they should be just as safe right?

If they are dot and snell they are pretty safe, but some snell approved helmets are "more safe" compared to others. If you have a snell approved lid its going to be safe enough but if you're like me your wearing your lid quite a lot noise, comfort, and ventilation (heat not just fogging) become a big issue.

I have that exact icon....
pros: it fits nicely, and had good ventalation, cheap on ebay brand new..easy change screens

cons: It wore out after a year of everyday use. All of the switches for the vents cracked, but i am pretty rough with my stuff... now there isnt a good seal so there is alot of road noise and it dries out my contacts.

overall... good care and the icon is great! but if you arent nice with it , it will break

i know for sure that the icon helmet is heavy as hell.

the rx7 corsair and x-11 are in a league of their own. the icon would be somewhere with the hjc helmets.

if money isn't an issue i say get the x-11 or rx7.

I have the mainframe helmet. Blue with chrome vents on top.. My friend has the helmet your looking at flat black and all. I rode with his and mine and I can tell a difference between the 2. I love mine it has more vents and I think better padding. His does fog up and is louder than mine. I wouldn't trade mine for the world but my friend has a Aria and he said when he switched from a cheaper helmet like $250 to that it was night and day. I don't have the $ to spend on a real nice lid like that now so that's why I got the ICON....I'd spend a lil extra and at least get the mainframe. GL

just to let you know the flat black scratches REAL easy..It will take nothing to scratch that lid..So if you like nice stuff I'd stay away from the flat black.

I have an ICON mainframe and Suomy Spec 1R.
It is like night and day between the helmets. I loved my icon when i got it.
But now that I have my Suomy I don't see myself wearing the Icon anymore. The fit is so much nicer and just feels better on my head.

Go try on the helmets you are looking at getting. The one that feels the best on your head and gives you as much neck movement and ease of use. Should be the one you buy. Every person is going to have the helmet they like the most.
If you have the money and can afford the more expensive helmet and it fits your head, Jump on it.

I wish they had this when i got my Icon

Not to down Arai Helmets, but their design and technology is as old as time. Infact from the major rumors I have heard in teh Industry the NEW Snell rating was administered on all helmets and the only helmets to pass were Shoeis! Also why would you want a heavy Arai when you get a a sleeker, lighter Shoei?

Bottom Line is Arai puts too much into advertising and promotion and Shoei spends MOney on Research and design....Oh yeah I prefer a sold color helmet, just like a solid color bike, people notice the bike, not the stickers

If you're only worried about how the helmet would hold up, Icon will hold just fine. My roommate went down twice, once with an Icon and once with a KBC. Both are pretty cheap brands but BOTH saved his life. Each one took a lot of impact and each one held up.
I personally am a fan of Shoei. If you can afford it, go with Arai, Shoei, or Suomy

that Icon with the skulls is sweet. Plan on picking that up sometime down the road. I have two helmets as it is and i really don't think i need 3...
