Default 01 F4i, problem starting... Rich fuel smell from exhaust...

Ok, I am pretty sure, that my problem might be caused by the fact I have 87 octane in it. Not 100% sure though. Let friend in from military ride it while I was at work last week. Told him to put gas in it, and he did. I don't know what kind of gas is recomended on a new Shadow, so maybe he didn't know not to put crap gas in mine. Or, maybe he was just being a cheap bastard. Well, I get the bike back, and it has, a sort of stumble when it started. Then I rode it, and it felt like it was missing horribly. So, rode it, and after a few minutes, it kind of cleared up, but could tell it still wasn't right. Parked it, go out the next day(chilly, but not too cold), and it just turns over, and a rich smelling exhaust is all I get. So, just hop in the car and go to work. Well, that night, I get home(late, very cold), and try again, and it stumbles a little, then starts... I let it idle for about 5 minutes... And cut it off. So, I get up the next morning(chilly), hoping to ride to work since it was a nice morning. And once again, nothing but rich fuel smell. Anyone got any suggestions?
Tomorrow, I plan on putting in new plugs, and siphoning the gas out, and adding 93.

I would read your manual to see what type of octane your bike takes before you remove the tank....
