Default 2001 Honda CR-V Transmission sticking in 4th gear

first post here.. thanks for having me..

I am having a problem with my automatic transmission (2001 Honda CR-V). Eighty percent of the time when i turn on the car and switch to "D", the transmission seems to be stuck in 4th gear and then I have to start in "1" and then change to "2" and then change to "D". Once in "D", the transmission seems to be stuck in 4th gear and won't change again to any other gear. Additionally, the tachometer is not working.

I am located in Switzerland and the Honda service center said they needed to replace the computer (quote was $1000 for the part and labor).

a couple of questions..

1. Should I change the transmission fluid?
2. I plan to check the connections between the computer and the transmission to make sure it's all clean
3. Should I attempt to replace the transmission solenoid valves
4. Should I order and change the computer myself? Is it a simple process? plug-n-play? or would some diagnostics need to be run?

Is there anything else I could do before I drop the $1000 at the local honda garage. I will also get a second opinion but if the replacements are simple then I might try it myself.

Thanks for any advice
Mike

I was under the impression that the transmission was the same or very similar as that on the Civic. I was hoping maybe someone could give me some general advice..

If this post should be in a different section of honda-tech then please let me know where I should put it.

Thanks for any help!
