Default Correct way of checking ATF level

The books call for measuring the ATF level when the engine is off, but still hot.
i.e. checking the level within one minute of shutting off the engine.

Most places check the level with engine idling. Which is the correct way ? What are the pros and cons of each ?

Check with engine off and on level ground. Engine hot or cold, it really does not matter.

Honda is the oddball so a non-specialist garage doesn't always know about that.
