my 99 F4 gets HORRIBLE gas mileage
my 99 F4 i recently purchased GUZZLES gas
it has 23,xxx miles
im wondering what could it be? friend said tune up and carb sync
lets just say went for a ride today everyone filled up at the gas station did a total of about less than 100 miles of riding. when going home my gas light came on.
i go thru full tanks of gas like nothing
pictures just for the hell of it
got the bike for 2500
put a new chain and sprocket on

i dont take it up to redline seeing as im new to riding, i ride mainly highway i try and keep the throttle consistent. i never dog the bike. i mean i do gun it from time to time, but never to redline. usually i shift 4-5k while cruising.
even if i did i dont think that much gas should just guzzle away!, i fill it up TO THE VERY TOP and it barely last. :/

Is there a lot of backfiring when you ride? Are the spark plugs dark? You may be running too rich.
Are you heavier than "normal"? The bike might use up more fuel to pull heavier loads (no offense intended...I'm no light-weight at 235).

You are topping off the tank at fuel stops - right?
Any 600 should be getting at least 50mpg.
Like stated above - get the valves adjusted and change the spark plugs (sounds like yer gonna need to get the carbs jetted too - I suspect soemone already tried and didn't know what they were doin).

at least 50mpg?! I don't know how you ride.
When i first got my bike i took it very easy, and i got high 40s gas mileage. But now, i romp on it alot, and i get high 30s sometimes.

yeah man my friend has the same bike and he puts on like 165-170 every time he fills up. He is smaller then you he weighs about 145-150. He cruises it also not really speeding.
How big is the tank?
I know my riding style makes a huge impact on my gas mileage. If I'm just tooling around, taking it easy on the windy backroads, I get anywhere from 50-60mpg. But when the pace is a little more "spirited" and I'm pretty much ringing it to redline in a few gears and keeping the RPM's up above 7-8k in the corners, I get low 40's.
I would definitely suggest a tune-up. At the very least, plugs and carb-sync, and see how it goes.

130 when lights come on? If so, that's pretty good.

Sometimes when my bike is just warming up I swear it spits out small droplets of gas, haha. It backfires like a son of a bitch when I am in higher RPM's slowing down or when I down shift and rev match. I'm afraid to take it any where around here though, every place seems to be soley revolved around harleys.
