Default Battery Relocating to trunk

I was wondering if anyone has done this (honda318dx?). If so, does it actual make a difference in the handling? How did the car handle after?

Also, how difficult is the install and are there any safety issues? Lastly, what kit have you used for the install?

i just relocated my battery to the trunk located in the passenger side corner of the car to offset the weight. i needed to make room for my intake. you just need to get enough battery cable to run the positive to the front where it hooks up to the fuse box and the starter. the ground can be grounded in the trunk. summit makes a relocation kit for like $50 or something like that. the kit will come with everything you need to do it. it is very easy.

Start by disconnecting the positive and negative battery terminals. Now loosen the hold down and remove the battery from the car. With the battery out of the car you will see 4 bolts securing the battery tray. There's also two brackets attached to the battery tray. Remove the tray and set aside. The ground wire that was connected to the battery is no longer needed. It runs down to the tranny. One bolt attaches it to the a bracket on the tranny and another on the frame. Remove both and toss out.

Next you need to run a 4 guage wire to the trunk for the new battery connection. I ran mine through a hole I cut in the firewall and down the passenger side. Mount the battery box in the trunk. Make the power connection and run a ground directly to the chassis.

You can relocated it back to the trunk but it has to be fuly covered and in a box. For autocrossing saftey purposes of course..

I got a kit from Jegs, or you can get one at summit racing or something.. Just takes some custom work, use your head, and you will figure it out.. Mount it in the lowest position you can in the truck (where the spare tire is)..

I am not sure if its legal for STX or STS, do a search in the Comp forum, you may find out, you might be only able to relocate inside the passenger compartment..

It did make a huge difference in my car, took 40lbs of the nose of the car..

For track purposes, the battery has to be in a selaed box with ventilation or they wont let you run. another way is to have a completely sealded battery which runs about $170. either way, its gonna cost a cheap mod.

you can relocate the battery anywhere EXCEPT for the passenger inside part of the car. including behind the passenger seat, for STS or STX. the best place to relocate a battery is in the opposite corner of the trunk from the driver. puts the extra 40 or so pounds on the opposite side of the driver to give the car a more balanced setting. plus, you also have a flat spot to mount the box to on the passenger side of the trunk.

Does this mean the $50 summit kit wont be good? Anyone else have an opinion on this?

I am going to be doing this as well. According to what I have read about nhra rules, those $40 boxes are not acceptble and you need a sealed box even if you have a sealed optima battery. I think I am going to get one of the aluminum boxes from summit.

Guys, you are talking about 2 different things.. You DO NOT need a sealed box to autox, or do track events with, but you do need one to drag race. Why, who knows...

You can also get marine battery boxes and straps and mounting kits at your local advanced auto/napa/ or whatever...
