Default Why you shouldnt bother with highflow cats

First off i've been smelling rotten egg lately, also its been Klanging around 1800-2000rpm and its not hitting the heat shield, and the last straw was cel 67: catalyst malfunction yesterday afternoon. Is my cat toast ?

I have a carsound cat that i installed like a year ago could it have gone bad already ???

What's your setup? If youre running around untuned, chances are it's toasted.

I've had mine for 2 years with zero problems.

Change the thread title to reason 40 out of 999999 to get your car tuned.

I have basic bolt ons thats it. Intake, header, highflow cat and itr exhaust. I dont see how tunning would have helped.

Running overly rich will kill a cat. I've even seen a Ford Escort lose an oxygen sensor, and run rich enough to kill its cat in inder 1 week. That said, your mods shouldn't have made it run rich enough to cause problems, unless something similar is happening to you.

u can tell ur running rich if

1. you constantly smell gas
2. ur gas mileage goes from bad to worse
3. if when u turn on/off ur car u get a puff of gas that was sitting in ur exhaust from not being burned.
4. if u have removed, changed, or failed to maintain any downstream or upstream o2 sensors

nope. LS with cams untuned getting 32mpg in the city, even when aggressive. but the missing here and there i think caused the cat to overheat at times and hence, a year later, the cat is toast.

you can also do a plug check and see if you have carbon on your plugs or if the are wet.

In my old accord my cat smelled for years and I barely passed emissions every time even w/burning a ton of oil and old o2 sensors. It might be fine but I have heard alot of bad stuff reliability and longevity wise about the carsounds, magnaflow seem to be the best highflow cats.

might be running too lean, heating up the cat too much all the time.. thats why you smell eggs.

might want to look into getting it tuned..

What's all this stuff about tuning? What exactly is there to tune in these cars? From the posts of the people with problems, it looks like they only have intake and exhaust mods; they haven't changed the ECU, so it seems like the only thing to tune would be the spark advance.

Now a days, ECU tuning is probably the best bang for you buck mod. After your basic bolt ons, you just changed how much air and how fast its exiting your car. It also unleashes some hidden power that you didnt know you had.

running a header, cai, free flowing exhaust, causes the engine to run a bit better- also making it a bit more lean.

if you're obd1 get your ecu chipped with chrome and get it street tuned!
