you are mistaken, they used to sell swap setups to use the r engine. they come stock with bullshit toyota motors.

The older elises had rover engines in them from the factor, some after market companies installed Honda motors in them. The newer Elises come stock with Toyota Celica engine. 190hp from the factory with an optional Lsd. The exige is gonna come out with the same Toyota engine this winter.

Oldie but a goodie!
Too bad Lotus Elises are peices of **** that fall apart at 3,000 miles.
(Yes, I've driven one with 3,000 miles and talked to the owner).
Yes, they are FAST and handle amazingly and that's just in stock form
