Default All Stock Civic - Cheap shocks

A co-worker's all stock Civic is needing some new shocks. He want improvment in handling. He is NOT a car guy, so lowering springs and Konis are out of the question. He will NOT spend $$$.

He was thinking of taking it to shops like PepBoys to get new shocks installed. He was asking me, if their "performance" shocks make a difference. Are they really performance? (again, not comparing to Koni)I think they are brands like Monroe. Meaning if he pay more for "Performance shocks" is he really getting "more"? Or better off with the "cheap stuff?"

Thanks

If he is not a car guy then why pay more for shocks.... Stay with the cheap stock struts.

bilstein, kyb gr2, and tokico blues are all good shocks that provide an improvement over stock for stock-like springs. they're more aggressively valved than stock. compare the prices of those w/ the cheap stuff and see what he's willing to spend on the "improvement" he wants.

performance shocks like monroe are usually gas shocks, which handle better

Stock Honda shocks are pretty darn good. Even Tokico HPs are just marginally better. If he wants a sportier ride, shocks aren't going to do it. Cheap ones will just make it worse.

Idealy, a set of Neuspeed springs (like the Sofsport) will give him what he is seeking. Tell him to spend the extra $$ and get some HPs and a set of Sofsports--night and day between the stock setup.

If you buy shocks at pepboys, expect what you pay for. There is a reason those shocks are $12/piece.

If he doesn't care about performance he should buy someone's used GSR or Si shocks. They're OEM, they'll still be better than what he had, and I doubt anyone would charge much for them.
