LS/VTEC or Build my B17
should i build my B17 or go LS/VTEC?
I need to replace my headgasket, t/b, w/p, tensioner on my b17, and its probably gonna need to be rebuilt soon as well, so instead of putting money into it now, maybe I should just buy an B18 Block and build an LS/VTEC.
whataya you think?
The LS/VTEC will put a little more hp to the wheels, but im just worried about how long it will last. I got 239,200 miles on my b17 and just wondering how many miles I can expect from an LS/VTEC.
and money is tight as well.

Can you afford not to have your car for awhile? If you can, might as well build the b17 while it's out of the car, rather than going and buying a whole new motor setup.
I had the same choice you do. I went with the build the b17 option. It was less money and it was fast when i finished and the ls vtec has a shorter life than just building the b17. I was out of a car for a while but it was worth it. What takes so long is the machine work for me anyway. Putting it back to gether was quick when i set the time aside to do it. If you do a ls vtec the right way it will be stronger but cost lots more. Build your b17
how did you guys build your b17's??? what kind of parts etc...
Have you dyno'd??? any HP numbers after the build. I got time to have it outta the car.. thats not a problem.

i did the jg pro series head type R intake manifold port matched jg throttle body 310rc injectors venom fuel pump(not recommended its crap) AEM fuel rail and pressure reg ctr cams jg cam gears JE 10:5:1 pistons bore 25 over JDM type R 4-1 header center force stage 2 clutch and factory lightened fly wheel to 10lb or 12lb can't remember. Never got to dyno it but it was fast. But remember to keep gas in the tank super if you can afford the extra $3 per tank and never never run out of gas going 80 if you do anything like i did. RIP b17 it was a good motor until i ran it out of gas....BOOM. leans it out and with higher compression you don't want to do that. But up to that point it was fast. Good Luck

I would keep the B17, I have a basically stock B17 with just intake/header/exhuast, lightweight flywheel and exedy stage two clutch. And its alot of fun, the only upside of the LS/Vtec would be some added lowend torque which is really the only thing that the B17 lacks.
I like lsvtec...and i have never ever had any problems after 2 years of beating on it. But tis true that keeping your b17block and head would probably be more reliable. If you really want power and go faster than 13's then TURBO.
When LSVTEC frank engines started to be assembled, they were being done as a cost effective alternative to buying expensive B18C's. You already have an engine. Why not add the crank shaft and connecting rods of a B18B, along with Civic Type R pistons, and stroke your B17? It will have the same results in power, without having to add specialty parts, and modifying OEM components, while keeping money in your pocket.
Best of luck!

im thinking the b17 too.. those new Crower Maxi Lite rods sound good
but im wondering how much power i can push outta the B17 and still keep it daily driveable. I've heard around 170whp outta built B17.. anyone know of higher #'s????
