Poll: Canon 300d Vs. Nikon D50 - DSLR Cameras
i'm in the market for a new dslr camera in the $600-700 range, and i've had my eye on the 300d for quite some time now. but then i've noticed that nikon came out with a new dslr camera thats a bit more affordable and i've seen the impressive pictures that the d70 have taken. i've been a faithful canon user since my two previous P&S cameras were canons, but with this new nikon i'm considering crossing over. would just like to get some opinions from some of the more experienced dslr camera owners on which they would prefer and why.
reason why i didn't mention the canon 350d xt is because its a bit pricey right now, and what i want to get accomplished i can get done with the 300d imo. and with the 350 xt out now, the 300d prices are starting to drop

D Series all they way (camera not motor). If you can, do some searching and pick up the D70, can find them pretty cheap since the D70s came out and replaced the 70.

The funny thing about this is that if you are going to go nature shots or still shots the best camera is going to be the Nikon. But if you do action or sports or anthing that involves movement its the Canon. If you go to any sporting event like MLB, NBA, NHL or NFL its the Canon camera and teh White lens body that is the dominant camera. But if you talk to nature enthusiasts or journalists or even wedding photographers is Nikon. So both of them are good. Its just up to the user.
the 300D is quite a bit cheaper than the D50 actually since its an older discontinued model. i sold my 300D + kit lens for $515 shipped not long ago, and that was a good price the seller paid me. i'd say save the money on the body and go with the 300D, and use the extra money for good lenses.
i ahve a mag that does a review on both of the cams. i should take pics ot he article and post it.

SORRy for the pics being so big. they are made big on purpose so htat you could read the article. if yo ustill cant read it. save imge as and zoom in!
hope this helps. if you cant tell by now. the d50 comes out on top. nikon > canon
lol @ those tests. when you compare cameras like that you should compare them at the same settings. shutter speeds are different, and the d50 doesn't have iso 100 so of course the higher iso will render more detail
dpreview does a good job, they use the same lens (50mm f1.4 for the respective manufacturer and same settings when comparing). the above test doesn't necessarily show which is a better camera. the d50 could be a much better camera with a crappier kit lens or vice versa...
[this is of course coming from a non-biased perspective]

you have to consider the start up time of the 300d compared to the 350d xt
the 300d takes forever to start up
the 300d is a great camera though
i got good use out of mine
click the link in my sig to see the work i've done with it (everything but the landscape shots are with the 300d)

also, keep in mind used d70's go for $600ish

you should also consider what kind of lens you'll be getting in the future. As a Nikon user, I have to admit the market for used Canon lens is much broader than Nikon's.
On the other hand, you should really stick to getting L lens if you end up with Canon, they have good quality and keeps their values. Whereas Nikon lens are great no matter they are 2.8 or not.
So, figure out what kind of pictures you'll most likely be taking, what kind of lens you'll want to get, and then choose the camera.
IMO: Nikon >>> Canon.

thanks for the input guys. that was a great article and after reading it, it made my decision that much harder to make. i especially like how the picture quality came out a bit better with the nikon, but i do like the fact that the canon comes with a raw software included. i guess i can't go wrong with either camera.
so i went into kits camera today and the magazine was soo right. although the 350d is smaller, the d50 felt so much more better in my hand. i think i'm pretty much sold on the nikon.
cough canon cough
