I think it depends on the bottle. Motul comes in plastic bottles which I believe causes it to absorb moisture. Not sure how long it's shelf life is; I definately wouldn't store it for more than a year.

ATE brake fluid comes in metal cans so I believe it keeps a lot longer.

Any specific reason you are asking or just curious?

I am pretty sure you can keep brake fluid indefinately if it is unopened.. I dont see how moisture would get into a sealed container...

I duno on an opened bottle.. I think it would depend on your climate, i.e. a less humid area it would prolly last longer...

Plastic itself is somewhat permeable so eventually moisture is going to slowly creep in. Quote from http://www.rx7turboturbo.com/robrobinette/brakes.htm :

It comes in plastic containers which do not have a long shelf life. Don't buy lots of this stuff at a time because moisture can make its way through the plastic containers.
Call it bullshit, but I am pretty sure this is true.

That guy is wrong about Castrol SRF. SRF is the finest brake fluid out there in pretty much all categories, except price. It's very much non-hygroscopic, unlike Motul and a lot of the other high performance fluids. It also has an exceptional wet boiling point, so even if it does absorb fluid, it isn't affected nearly as much.

Of course, this still doesn't mean that I'm going to pay $70 a can.

It's bullshit. Plastic containers keep moisture out just fine.

However, I wouldn't let brake fluid sit around more than a year or so, no matter WHAT the sealed container is, metal OR plastic. Buy it when you need to use it.

Castrol SRF is good stuff, but at $75 per liter, it's pricey.
