Default So on the way to work this morning... (omg tech related!)

When I was getting onto freeway this morning from a stop sign I opened her up a bit (from a roll) while getting onto the on-ramp. When the motor hit about 7k it choked or stumbled for a second and then recovered.

Any idea what this might be? Oil starvation? I changed the oil about 2k ago, but I haven't checked the level yet (I had to head into the office) as I'm going to do that on my lunch break. I do know that the oil light in the ITR doesn't always work properly (so I've heard) so I'm curious as to the oil level.

On a side note, the last few days I noticed the car was sounding slightly different than usual at VTEC crossover, almost like its taking a fraction of a second longer than usual to engage.

A few things about this morning:

1. The motor was warmed up
2. The tires had not broken free (I didn't hammer the throttle, just an easy increase)

Any tech help is appreciated.

I'm about to replace the PCV valve, Oil and Water pumps as part of my maintenance regiment. Not sure those will have anything to do with my problem though.

Thanks all!

1. Shitty title
2. Check oil level
3. If #2 is ok check the vtec selinoid (sp)
4. You only have 1 water pump and should change the timing belt while your there.

Plugs, wires? Aftermarket fuel pump? I would have to say no on oil stravation, I would think it would cut at the crossover.

Sorry about that title, any mods want to change it? Heh.

I'll have to check out my Helms and see where the solenoid is located, I've never done that before.

I'll check out the oil when I get a second, I'm at work so it'll have to wait, unfortunately.

Yeah, I'm aware that there is only one water pump in the car, thanks. Read that again, it's oil and water pumps (meaning an oil pump and a water pump, maybe my grasp of the english language sucks, I dunno)

I've got a timing belt on the way actually, and that's going to be replaced as well.

Thanks for the info.

My understanding is that the oil (idiot) light only goes on when the pressure with the motor running is 3 psi or less ... heresay actually, as I've never seen that spec in the manual.

If the oil level is fine, what are some indications of vtec solenoid failure?

The solenoid is at the front passenger side of the valve cover, that rusty little sylinder thingy. Has a green wire coming out of it.

No need to change the oil pump.... just water pump and t-belt, tensionser and tensioner spring/bolt.

If you follow the plug wire cover towards the passenger fender. Right there that little circle looking thing is it. Sorry I don't have a chance to circle it for ya.

Anyone know off the top of their head when the manual says to replace the oil pump? Should I replace it anyway if I'm in there?

I see it, looks like the end of a shampoo bottle or something. That should be pretty easy to replace if need be.

I've never heard of replacing the oil pump as part of routine maintenance!

Hmmm, I'd like to find the best way to try and troubleshoot this before I start buying parts.

I'll check the oil, if the oil is good then I'll test the solenoid to see if it's working properly.

After that I'm at a loss.

There is a screen in the solenoid that might be clogged up. Just take it off clean it with brake cleen and put it back on. No need to buy any parts right now.

I just got off of the phone with Len and he mentioned that I should check the resistance of the coil, ignitor and wires. He also mentioned that the crank shaft sensor in the dizzy can cause a loss of power similar to what I had happen today.

Anyone experience this before?
