Type R motor rebuild/upgrade
The R just past 112k. Its burning a considerable ammount of oil, and smokes like spy hunter under load. During winter break from school, I'll have the time and some money to invest in the R. I'm trying to order the parts soon so I have everything ready to go by mid December. Not sure what to do. I have $1500-1700 to spend if needed. My friend said to just get a headgasket, OEM stock bore rings and call it a day. No reason to replace the pistons or anything else. He said he wouldn't even do a valve job or mess with the head. Thats option 1. Option two is to upgrade the head. I'm leaning towards a complete rocket motorsports m22 package. Cams, valve springs, retainers, along with new OEM rings, and a valve job on the head. Maybe replace the valves with some flat faced valves to up the compression slightly.
Any opinions on what to do? Never touched a honda before. Car has a 4-1 2.5" header and intake. Everything else is stock.

Determine what is causing so much oil to burn first. Check the valve seals and pistons/rings. Once you determine where it's coming from go from there. If the walls are scored you might want to at least hone it. If the scratches are deep you may want to bore it. Just depends but I would take it apart first and take a look.

I agree, do a compression/leakdown test and see what is wrong with your motor before you go replace stuff thats not causing a problem.

So I can't pull it apart, inspect to see whats wrong, order parts, wait, etc. I need to just get the stuff, and do it. </TD></TR></TABLE>
Then put it off. No really don't do it if you can't tear down the motor and really inspect what's going on. If you don't have the time to do it now, wait until you do.

Well, thats all the time I have, and I can't wait another year to do it.
My friend has replaced piston rings in cars in an afternoon more times then he can count. Never had a bad experience doing it. Figured do rings, valve seals, and all the things that could be causing it.

If that's the case then PM user Len and buy another short block and look at the head, do a valve job, replace the valve seals and make sure everything looks ok up top. I'm not trying to be a dick here but seriously, why do it if your not going to do it right?
