Helicoil kit for transmission case bolts. 12 x 1.25mm...anybody know what size drill bit?
The bolt is a 12x 1.25
I can't find a helicoil kit for it in stock anywhere, I can order one...but do you guys know how large of a hole needs to be drilled for these kits?
I'm trying to figure out if these stripped bolt holes are repairable with a helicoil.
The rear two are the ones that need to be repaired. The one closest to the engine is fine.
You can see how they are oblonged out a little. Looks like someone drilled the bolts out before.
Anybody know what size drill bit you predrill with for a 12 x 1.25 helicoil? I'm wondering if it's just big enough that these holes can be repaired!

depending on the "kit" the bit usually comes with -
otherwise its listed with the coils
be careful with those things - there not forever

Jonathan;
Go to a tool shop that sells the kits and find the correct drill size from the instructions. They are normally a hard to find size (like in 1/64 increments), but for them to work correct, you have to use the correct one!!
The big problem you will have is that unless you make up a jig or have a machine shop do the drilling, it will not be centered correctly due to how the hole was damaged. (the photo shows it blown out on one side)
(I checked out in the garage and I don't have that size kit, sorry)

I work for Pep Boys and we don't sell a 12 x 1.25 either individually or with an entire kit.
The hole is already too large to use a 12 x 1.25 kit anyway.
I'm going to try to double up on them...

Id say take it out and have someone weld it up...drill and tap a new hole in it. A heli-coil is only good for holes that are stripped, not blown out the side. And as stated before, they are not forever, and will eventually come out.

I don't need anything permanent...I just need to get the car on the road.
I only need it to last me a few months at the max.
I'm trying to get this thing done without having to drop the transmission again. lol.
