Default GM does it again - dominance in sport compact racing

So there was a time attack event today at Buttonwillow raceway... several sport compact drag people were there (Rado was helping the Twins out with a supra, Ron Bergenholtz was crew for an old-school datsun 510 which had a dope rotary engine, and Shaun Carlson was helping on a mopar team).

but most notable was the fastest time of the day. With several of the top japanese tuners there, including several fully tuned RHD cars (s2k's and Skylines from J's racing, Cwest, signal, and a few others) and several high-power AWD cars (skylines, lancer evo's, s4's, and wrx's), and guess who had the fastest time of the day?

hint - it was ecotec powered.

ps - it was SEVERAL seconds faster than the next competitor, and the only FWD car under 2:00 !!

Discuss.

Subject to further information, I'll say "is this surprising?" or "does it really matter?"

In racing, money wins. And when money is equal, then expertise wins. GM throws more dollars and engineers at import oriented racing than anyone else _by far_. It _almost_ doesn't matter what platform they start with in something like NHRA or Time Attack.

The battle is a little more difficult in something like Grand Am Cup ST, or World Challenge Touring should they decide to try there. I know some people from GM Grand Am Cup Cobalt teams and they were biding their time this year. They will dominate the first part of the season next year until rules are put in place to equalize, but they'll have enough in reserve and enough of a points lead to claim the championship barring any surprises. And if they really want to win World Challenge Touring, I wouldn't bet against them (look at the CTS-V's in GT).

Unfortunately for GM, all that money invested probably isn't going to help them sell too many more Cobalt SS's. Its an admirable effort, and I wish Honda would do more of it, but spending the $$$ to create a winning race car doesn't mean your production car is better than the competition's (see Mazda Protege in World Challenge several years ago).

One quick fact. GM had been practicing that track three test days in advance. GM also had the whole track to themselves the day before the event. So they had a whole day as well as previous days of the event to get the track figured out. All the other teams had only that day to figure out the track. The guy right behind the Cobalt was only one second behind and did not have the day before to practice. So I think all us IMPORT guys did pretty good.

One more thing...... money does'nt always win. GM and their 3.5 million dollars had nothing on us this 2005 season.

GM comes in our industry to prove something to the industry.......................................... ...........................All of us are in it because we love it.

Yup. Big, bad General Motors. Too bad they have crap products and worse management. Good thing Honda doesn't need to worry about filing for protection from creditors. Dumbasses. GM needs to prioritize.... soon.
