my mom has a 1989 accored se-i. sometimes it wil just randomly surging like the idle, like it idles then revvs up to like 2000rpm then drops back down to idle, then repeates this right after it gets back down to idle. it does it for like 5 minutes then stops and it will idle normal. could the iac just be dirty? i rember seeing a thread on how to remove the iac and everything from the throttlebody but i cant find it, it had pictchures and everything, can someone tell me what the problem is or if the iac senser if jus dirty, and give me the link to that thread if they have it

 

most likley the cause is actually the fast idle thermo valve, or fitv.
with as many questions about it and idle problems they should make this link a sticky or something.

all honda fitv are all pretty similar so this should work

Is it cold now where you live? If so, this is caused by a stuck open thermostat. Happened to me and took me two years to figure out.

 

remove the top cover of the fast idle valve, 2 phillip screws, tighten the inner valve, reinstall cover, post results..
