Default should i pay the guy

I took my car in the other day to a honda mechanic to get lowering springs installed on my Integra . he installs 3 of shocks/springs and quits on 4th . It took him 2 hours to remove the rear left spring/strut because bolts were rusted shut. He then tells me that he doesnt want to deal with the last spring/strut and wants me to pay him for the work he has already done. So basically he left me hanging , am I the bad guy here for not wanting to pay him at all?

he also threatend to keep my wheel lock if I dont pay him. I think I should report this to the manager of honda. I dont know if it will work since he did the job on the side. Please give me some feedback

wheel lock?! wth you can break that lock off. dont pay him until he finish the job. and if he still dont want to finish the last one then talk to the manager and tell them your not going to pay for a half *** job. and if that dont work just dont pay and leave and go home and break the lock off

That sounds very shady. He can't handle the work, so he wants you to pay? BS, keep the cash and tell him to f*ck off.

last time i checked where I work as a technician,

YOU DONT GET PAID UNTILL THE JOB IS DONE!!!!!

so even if that last one is a pain in the ***, just tell the customer, you will be having to charge additionally and show them what the problem is, and you can make up for the extra time and everyones happy. but to bail out thats shady.

let him keep your wheel lock- buy a special removal socket made for removing wheel locks and get new ones for 20 bucks.

update : guy is charging extra to continue the job

yea im thinking of leaving and finding someone else who can break the bolt and change out the last strut. If the guy refuses to give me back the wheel lock i think im just going to take legal action just to see him get in a lotta crap just for trying to rip me off.

WHOA!!!! :steam coming out of my ears:

DO NOT PAY!!!!!!!!
I worked as a technician for three years during college. He CAN NOT charge you for what he has done. If you signed any paperwork that says 4 springs and struts, then he is legally bound to finish the job, otherwise he is required to take off the other three and put your old suspension on free of charge.

Also, there are laws that define how many hours a mechanic can charge for a job. If he can't do it in the legal amount of time, that's his problem to figure out. Hasn't he heard of liquid wrench or even WD-40 and a cheater bar? He CAN NOT charge you extra just because the job got tougher. He can charge more than the original estimate for parts, but not more than the alotted labor time. It's defined!

And you say he's threatening to keep YOUR wheel lock? Let him. Now it's a criminal case and you can press theft charges. Have his business taken, go wild.

It's guys like this that give mechanics a bad name.

Sorry, but I'm passionate about honest work. That's why all my friends and family hire me to do their work.

first of all, the job was done on the side.. i dont know if telling the manager at Honda will do anything.. but ya.. tell him to just finish the job and you'll pay him a little extra.. I know how it feels to tell a friend one price, then find out the job is gonna be a lot worse because of stupid rust and **** like that..

so to be nice, talk to him nicely, and ask him if you give him some more money, if he would do it.. doesnt have to be something ridiculous.. just a fair amount..

Its because he stripped the allan threads on the shocks, I had the same problem with my integra. now he cant get the **** off so he doesnt want to do it.

I had to grind the bolts off my rear shocks because they were rusted on. Then I had to buy new shocks

Good luck

You shouldn't feel bad at all. He's the one who is at fault in this situation. From what you said, he works at a Honda dealership which makes him a PROFESSIONAL mechanic. It's not his call whether something is too hard or not, if he was willing to do the job he should've finished it no matter what the circumstances.

I wouldnt trust him to work on my suspension after a stunt like that. AFter all your suspension = your life

if the guys that was doning your suspension for you works at a honda dealer(even though he is doing it on the side for you)... he is still using their(dealer's) equipment... let his boss know whats up...

Actually, what you have just experienced are the risks of taking your car to a mechanic doing the work on the side. You have no recourse if things don't work out right. If you had taken it to the dealership (or a reputable independent mechanic shop), you would have paid more, but the work would have been done properly.

I'm not excusing what the mechanic is doing - it's basically a scam called "bait and switch" in which he ups the price after you're on the hook for the work. But you never would have been in this situation in the first place if you hadn't been too cheap to take it to a legitimate, licensed shop.
