EDIT:
Never mind, i found these headers. Perfect for modding and keeping it a 4-1 or converting to a 4-2-1.

And all you have to do is get slip-on collectors that fit over the primaries with any size collector and piping after that.
According to the "rule of thumb", if your primary is 1 3/4" Outside Diameter, you can get a 4-into-1 merge collector with a 2.0" outlet or even bigger.

sometimes you can find them cheap on ebay. last week a b-series 4-1 sold for like $40-$50 shipped. it had never been used.

it's brand new for $100 and too bad i don't have a pic for you to see that it is constructed pretty well. But to ask you, as far as knowing how to find more power, how well do you think this $100 header will perform for a 2.0L if i mod the collector?
I am not paying $600+ for a 4-1 header that i can make just as much power out of this header by modding it.
So what's the reason?

for example look at the collector on a ssauto manifold and you'll see what i mean. then look at a burns (for example)the burns collector is extremely smooth and well developed. then look at the ssauto's one it looks like they mig welded it then went over the weld with tig. the inside has large fingers sticking out where they burned thru. i can only assume that with the volume they make those suckers at, they don't bother to purge or use flux.
do you have link to the header you're looking at? i bet they didn't use a true collector either, you know the one where they take a 3" tube heat it up and bend it around the primaries?
maybe this link will help explain what i'm talking about

here are pics of the headers im talking about:

what you said is exactly what i've been doing actually and i know the difference in collectors, so i gotcha.
BTW, for experimenting and R&D, i just buy my merge collectors from ssheaders.com. The guy does a good job making them to size, and they are inexpensive. One of the woman that i spoke to knows Randy Monroe (RMF), and she's always been helpful with giving me the right sizes as well. But Burnsstainless's parts are constructed flawlessly without a doubt.
And even better,..... modding the collector of the 4-1 headers that im talking about work out for me, since i don't prefer stepped primaries.
