Make gsr into type r
My friend wants to get a type r motor for his gs-r. is it better and or cheaper to make his gs-r into a type r or just but the complete swap from h motors for 4800? is it correct that to make a gs-r into a type r you only need ITr cams, pistons? any comments are apreciated
ooooh boy........touchy subject
ok before anyone gets in here to flame.....I'm just gonna go right out and say it. There's no way he can make his GS-R into a type R even if he swaps the motor into it. You will get people that will say that the suspension is still different ( not just it being 5 lug ), the rear subframe different, all the bars....chassis rigidity differences.....and finally....the V.I.N Number.......
oooh...not to forget the side moldings too
On the other hand.... though...if he wants to turn the motor into a "type R spec" motor, you can use the search feature to research the "poor mans type R" though...I still say if you wanted the performance value of the motor....just buy the motor.....

just buy an itr swap....unless your friend would rather dump that money into building the gsr..then of course the gsr would be better than the itr swap in the end.

if you want to turn your GSR into tas close as an R (even tho i think its better to just get an R complete swap motor) since im bored.. heres wat u need: fully built b16 head with R cams on fully built GSR block with R pistons, type R tranny, R manifold, and R ECU. this will run like a type R (poor mans ITR)

Go buy a Type R.
If he wants one so bad go get the actual car.

While swapping the motor would be an easy project, I'd personally go with a nice build on his current motor. With the type of money you are talking about spending to buy an c5 you can do some very good work to his current motor. You should see stronger numbers if you go that way. But if he just wants to say he has a type r motor, then buy one.

Ok onto me offering actual advice.
A nice boost setup on the GS-R engine can be pretty impressive. If I had the money and time I would have already boosted my slow hunk!

yea, with the money spent on the type r engine, you can build a turbocharged or strong n/a engine. tell your friend to keep the current engine unless it's broken. if he really wants a swap, tell him to save up and get a new k20 itr engine.
Just got sent a link of a guy in Oregon selling an perfectly legal ITR shell for 2k. If he really wants one, they do exist for sale.
Just in case you were wondering,
This is what I got sent:

I agree, for the kind of money you will spend on an itr swap you can squeeze a lot more power out of your c1

Might as well buy a K20 swap. I seen B18C5 swaps running about the same as K20 swaps. </TD></TR></TABLE> ok so ur saying this because there cost about the same or why? not tryin to be an *** just dont understand

I fail to see how that explanation is not completely self-explanatory. Price of b18c5 swap ~4500. Price of k20 swap ~5000. The k20 is the better motor, so he's saying if you're going to spend all the cash, you might as well get the better swap.
However, you have to take into account that it's going to be a lot harder to put the k20 in, get everything wired correctly.. I believe the consensus is that when it's all said and done, the k20 costs around 8,000 bucks or so to get it up and running, price of the swap included. The b18, on the other hand, is plug and play.
